Barbra Streisand received an Honorary Palme d'Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival and delivered her acceptance via video message, decades after every studio turned her down for Yentl. The legendary singer-actress-director-producer-writer used the moment to pull back the curtain on the grueling road that brought her most personal film to life, and the industry walls she had to bulldoze to get there. Few in Hollywood history have fought as hard, or as long, to tell a story they believed in, and Cannes finally handed Streisand the recognition that was decades in the making.

While Hollywood spent 15 years slamming doors in Streisand's face, she spent those same years building a career so undeniable that Cannes had no choice but to honour it.

Barbra Streisand, unable to attend Cannes in person due to a knee injury, sent a video message to accept her Honorary Palme d'Or, using the moment to deliver a masterclass in cinematic stubbornness. She recalled being drawn to storytelling after watching foreign films from directors like François Truffaut, Ingmar Bergman, Federico Fellini, and Akira Kurosawa near her high school, the very spark that eventually led her to Yentl, the passion project she would fight Hollywood for over 15 years to make. Working later with directors like William Wyler and Sydney Pollack only sharpened her instincts further.

"I was a woman, which was an obstacle to people, and even worse, I was an actress who wanted to direct, so every studio turned me down," she said in the video message.

She then added, "for 15 years the project was on the verge of collapsing, but I had to make this movie," a declaration that summarizes an entire era of Hollywood gatekeeping in one breath.

Yentl, released in 1983, was Streisand's directorial debut, a romantic musical drama she also co-wrote, co-produced, and starred in. Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's 1962 short story, the film follows a Jewish woman in 1904 Poland who disguises herself as a man to access education. It earned 68.7 million dollars at the box office, won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and decades later earned its creator Cannes' highest honour.

While Streisand's film rewrote Hollywood rules decades ago, Cannes 2026 proved the festival itself still has a taste for rule-breakers.

The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve and was distributed by Neon, extending the company's remarkable Palme-winning streak to seven consecutive wins. The Grand Prix went to Minotaur by Andrey Zvyagintsev, while the Jury Prize was awarded to The Dreamed Adventure, directed by Valeska Grisebach.

Earlier in the festival, John Travolta and Peter Jackson also received honorary Palmes, but it was Barbra Streisand's hard-won tribute that closed the night with the most weight.
