From the way it started, HBO’s The Big Bang Theory spinoff, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, did not seem more than a clever sitcom idea that rarely took its sci-fi elements very seriously. But as the show progressed and we saw the universe-hopping quartet of Stuart (Kevin Sussman), Bert (Brian Posehn), Denise (Lauren Lapkus), and Kripke (John Ross Bowie) go from one warped reality to another, the show really tapped into the full potential of its advanced scientific concept and cooked up a delectable concoction of laughter and thrill.

The finale of season 1 of the show was a testament to this claim, which really brought the series full circle, leaving the viewers on a high with a promise of a potential return at the very end. Episode 10, titled Spoiler: Filmed Before a Live Studio Audience, hits on its multiversal theme dead on its head - even harder than episode 9 ever did - and absolutely blurs the line between reel and reality. Just as the title suggests, the show makes its lead characters feel like they are in a sitcom; in fact, forget feel, it straightforwardly lets them know that they are in a sitcom.   

In many ways, the finale wraps things up for the first season of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe in the best possible way, answering some of the key questions regarding who and why behind the whole multiversal collapse, while casting a heavy shadow of doubt on the future of the mission to restore the realities.

The season finale of the TBBT spinoff finally answers the question that was consistently pressing upon the minds of the audience for quite some time in the series: who is actually trying to sabotage Stuart’s mission and to what end? We finally have an answer as the finale tries to be as thorough as possible in its explanation. 

For this, the makers give Kyle (Ryan Cartwright) the floor for an explanatory show-and-tell that takes us all the way back to the time when the Big Bang did not even happen. He told the gang that there existed an omnipotent consciousness (The Adversary, as mentioned in the previous episodes) which enjoyed the silence that eventually vanished after the landmark cosmic event. 

He is now working against Stuart to restore everything back to the way they were before the universe as we know it came into being. The entity was the one who sent Stuart to the mental institution in episode 4, and also the one who trapped him and his friends in a comic book. But they cannot do much with this information, as they do not have enough information on the entity to figure out a way to stop it.

Right now, they have even bigger and more urgent problems to deal with, as they do not even know where they are currently.

As soon as Kyle finishes up explaining The Adversary, the focus shifts to where they are currently, rather than lingering on the newly obtained information, which seemed really threatening if one looks at it closely. An omnipotent being that is older than the universe itself, and is working aggressively to erase all existence just to get its eternal peace, is beyond menacing. But one thing the gang has learnt in this multiversal journey is that urgent problems come first. And now figuring out where they are takes precedence over the pre-existence threat. 

However, this time a simple look outside the door of the comic book store is not of much help, as there is literally nothing outside. Kyle informs them that the comic book store is floating in an infinite void of nothingness that exists outside time and space. This fact worries the gang more than the looming threat of The Adversary, and all they want to know is how and why.

To make things more confusing, there is this fake recorded laughter - like the one sitcoms have - that can be heard at every joke, but apparently only Kripke can hear it initially. There is also this phenomenon where the lights suddenly go bright for a brief moment, which really spooks Kripke. On the other hand, Stuart is busy figuring out why all of a sudden Denise is mad at him. Actually, Denise is pissed at him for forgetting her birthday, but she wants him to figure it out on his own (typical sitcom side-story).

Gradually, the whole gang starts to notice these things and wonder what is actually up with all these unexplained things happening to them. It was Kripke who adds things up and reaches a conclusion that they are actually in a sitcom right now. 

Kripke, for once, proved to be the brains of the gang as he correctly deduced their current predicament, and as soon as he pinpointed their situation, a passage appeared to a mysterious place. The gang entered one by one, only to see an actual live audience in a studio-like setting cheering on what appeared to be a curtain call for a show called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.

Just before their eyes, they could see themselves coming out to the stage as their real-life names, with the characters they play in the show, were being called one after another. It was a pretty meta scene that became even more mind-bending for the gang than everything else already was. They immediately walked out of there, only to reveal that they were on Stage 25 on the Warner Bros. lot that once housed their parent show, The Big Bang Theory.   

Stunned and disoriented, the characters realize that they are trapped in a reality different from our own. While our world boasts Young Sheldon and Two and a Half Men, the meta-dimension where Stuart and his companions find themselves features Young Leonard and Two and a Half Women. This subtle shift hints at a wider ripple effect of changes in this alternate universe, leaving audiences to wait for the upcoming season to uncover what else has been altered.

After seeing so many bizarre things, one would assume that the gang might have become impervious to shocking realities. But this one proves all of those assumptions wrong and reminds the audience that the makers once again remind the viewers that they are the same people responsible for the iconic TBBT, and they are not going to let complacency dictate where the spinoff to such a brilliant IP goes. 

While the gang is wondering where they go from here and what even is reality at this point, Stuart steps up with optimism and a joke. Optimism about finding the truth, which might be out there in Burbank or Studio City, which also works as a joke. The finale ends on a familiar note: Stuart discussing his disgusting health issues, like his irritable bowels in this case. Kudos to the writers for keeping his character consistent right until the end despite a lot of things happening around him.

One thing that needs to be discussed is the fate of Kyle, who got left behind in the comic book store. 

While Stuart and his companions take the courageous leap into the unknown, Kyle chooses caution. Terrified of the omnipresent Adversary and unwilling to risk walking into a lethal, smoke-filled void, he stays behind. Left all alone in the comic book shop - now suspended in a blank nothingness that completely bars him from exiting - Kyle briefly pushes his dread aside, perhaps distracted by the brief visit from Stuart and his friends.

Seeking a semblance of normalcy, he begins cleaning up the scattered trash after the gang had left, only for the Adversary to abruptly reappear. The sudden encounter brings a sickening wave of horror as he realizes he has failed his assigned duty, echoing Trevor's past mistake of reading the comic book and failing to keep Stuart and the group trapped inside.

For that misstep, Trevor had been ripped apart by the perilous entity now standing before Kyle, reminded sharply that he had been given one simple job and botched it. Even so, this does not automatically mean the creature will incinerate Kyle and reduce him to ashes. For reasons still shrouded in mystery, the entity specifically selected the two of them for this monumental responsibility. Perhaps this time around, rather than resorting to lethal punishment, it will opt for a new strategy and grant Kyle a second chance. Things will only become clear with the second season of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe.
