'Stranger Things’ Finale Pushes David Harbour Out of Upcoming Pedro Pascal Project

No one is okay after the Stranger Things finale. The gates may be shut and Hawkins finally quiet, but the fandom is still buzzing: rewriting endings, debating sacrifices, and clinging to every last echo of that synth-soaked goodbye. And the fire has reached the cast. It is over, truly over, and for the actors who lived in this world for nearly a decade, the comedown is proving just as intense as the final battle.

And with the Upside Down behind him, David Harbour is quietly rethinking what comes next as he steps away from a Pedro Pascal starrer project.

As first reported by Variety, David Harbour has exited Behemoth!, an upcoming drama from Michael Clayton director Tony Gilroy, backed by Searchlight Pictures. Multiple insiders associated with the project confirmed that Harbour stepped back from it due to timing and Harbour's mental state, citing exhaustion as the reason, due to Stranger Things. He was set to star alongside Pedro Pascal and Olivia Wilde in the project.

It is understandable why Harbour would have stepped back as the end of Stranger Things was not a simple wrap; it was followed by a prolonged, global episodic rollout and intense press commitments. This was the kind of cultural saturation that turns a role into a public identity. Harbour, who carried Jim Hopper from gruff small-town sheriff to one of the show’s emotional anchors, reportedly chose to pause rather than push through.

But professional exhaustion is only part of the picture. David Harbour’s public image has also been under a harsh spotlight.

David Harbour’s private struggles go public

David Harbour’s personal life has been increasingly visible. His separation from singer Lily Allen, whom he married in 2020, became public in early 2025. Allen later released 'West End Girl', an album widely interpreted as chronicling infidelity, emotional collapse, and the aftermath of their split. In interviews, she has spoken candidly about how destabilizing the period has been, both for herself and her family.

Adding to the scrutiny was a viral Reddit post describing an unsettling encounter at a Vista, California, gas station involving a man believed to be Harbour. The account, which remains unverified, described erratic behavior and drew widespread debate online, with fans divided between concern, skepticism, and calls for privacy. Adding to these were the rumors of him dating Winona Ryder during Stranger Things, all untrue and baseless.

Harbour has also been open for years about living with bipolar disorder since age 26, making the collision of fame, stress, and speculation especially fraught. For Harbour, the end of Stranger Things is a reckoning. Stepping back from Behemoth! reads like self-preservation after years inside a cultural phenomenon.
