According to Empire magazine, long before Interstellar became a science fiction classic, it was in the hands of Steven Spielberg. He spent a full year developing the project alongside producer Lynda Obst and astrophysicist Kip Thorne. Spielberg conducted extensive research at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, to ensure the story's scientific foundations were accurate.

He even hired Jonathan Nolan to write the initial drafts of the screenplay. However, the collaboration did not result in a final production under his direction. Spielberg eventually decided to step away, allowing Christopher Nolan to take the helm and bring his unique vision to the story.

“The second I decided not to make it, Chris jumped on board, probably the next day. Interstellar was a much better movie in Chris Nolan's hands than it would have been in mine", Steven Spielberg said after listening to Jonathan Nolan.

“If there comes a point where you decide not to make this movie, I can tell you who's gonna grab it. He's already bugging me about it. And that's my brother Chris", Jonathan Nolan said to Spielberg. Spielberg later noted that the film was likely better in the hands of the younger director. This transition allowed the project to evolve into the ambitious and emotional epic that audiences recognize today.
