The friction between Ben Affleck and Steven Spielberg, according to filmmaker Mike Binder’s revelation on the One Bad Movie podcast, stemmed from an incident involving Spielberg’s young son. Binder claimed that he and Spielberg were set to work together on a film titled Man About Town, but things went awry when the Batman actor joined the project.
Per Binder, Spielberg first attempted to drop out of the film, citing Affleck’s then-recent box office trajectory. However, he later shared what the actual reason behind his decision was.
According to Mike Binder on One Bad Movie podcast, Steven Spielberg was angry with Ben Affleck in the 2000s after the actor made his son cry during a family trip to Spain. Affleck had joined the vacation as his goddaughter Gwyneth Paltrow’s then-boyfriend.
Binder claimed that Spielberg told him his son threw Affleck into the pool while he was fully dressed, prompting Affleck to retaliate by throwing the boy back into the water, which made him cry. Spielberg apparently did not take the incident lightly, refusing to collaborate with Affleck as a result of that.
Mike Binder and Ben Affleck ultimately went ahead with Man About Town, but it did not fare well among audiences.
Revisiting the commercial fate of Man About Town
Man About Town, released in 2006, featured Rebecca Romijn, John Cleese, Bai Ling, and Jerry O’Connell alongside Ben Affleck. The film followed Affleck's Jack Giamoro as a top Hollywood agent struggling with his crumbling marriage.
The movie holds a 38 percent Tomatometer rating and a 29 percent Popcornometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. Notably, the film performed so poorly that it went straight to DVD in the United States, while receiving only a brief theatrical release internationally.
