Steve Carell has played a few unforgettable comedic roles, from his brilliantly awkward Michael Scott in The Office to his charmingly chaotic Cal Weaver in Crazy, Stupid, Love. Now, the actor is returning to play yet another comical character in his career in the upcoming HBO comedy Rooster. And for this role, Carell has teamed up with Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.

After displaying expertise with the hilariously cringeworthy boss Michael Scott, Steve Carell is set to take on the role of a father in the upcoming comedy series Rooster. The story follows Carell’s character, a best-selling author in his own right, as he arrives at a liberal arts college where his daughter works. The turn of events happens to be his daughter Katie facing a personal crisis after discovering her husband’s infidelity, which Carell is tasked with bringing to life. 

With such a distinctive premise, the creators have also assembled a talented cast to run this unique story.

Steve Carell: The actor will play the role of author Greg Russo, a paternal roles follow his othe  other upcoming projects.

Charly Clive: Clive, known for Pure, The Lazarus Project, and Housewarming, will play the role of Greg's daughter Katie. 

Phil Dunster: Dunster, known for Judy, The Good Liar, and Murder on the Orient Express, will play the role of Archie, who causes the upheaval in Katie's life, with a student named Sunny.

Lauren Tsai: Tsai, who has featured in Legion and Terrace House: Aloha State will play the role of Sunny in the movie.

Annie Mumolo, Robby Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Connie Britton, and Rory Scovel are among the other notable names joining the cast. Now that the cast and storyline have been revealed, fans are eagerly wondering when they can expect the series to arrive.

Release date of Rooster

Rooster is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on March 8, 2026. Following its pilot debut, new episodes will be released weekly for fans to catch up. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Steve Carell also spoke highly of the series.

“I read the script and it was one of the best comedy pilots I’ve read — period,” he said. The actor expressed his instant enchantment with the pilot episodes, crediting the creators' ability to world-build as seamlessly to be a primary factor in his approval of the role, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

The series will follow the story of Russo and his daughter across 10 episodes, as per its IMDb listing. And with Carell’s praise for the series, the anticipation for the show is clearly higher than ever. Now, whether Russo surpasses Michael's odd sense of humor is something that remains to be seen.
