With her own life rooted in Sterling Point as she cares for her younger sibling, Maple, while her mother drifts from one spiritual retreat to another, Oona cannot simply pack up and leave. Believing she is holding Ramona back, Oona chooses heartbreak before heartbreak can choose her. She ends the relationship herself, convincing herself it is the kinder option.

Even when Ramona returns, helped by Maple in an attempt to make things right, Oona hides away, pretending she is not home rather than confronting the pain she is trying so hard to outrun. It is a devastating ending for a couple that had finally begun to let their guards down.

If Sterling Point returns, the next season seems less concerned with introducing fresh conflicts than exploring the emotional consequences of the ones it has already so carefully planted.
