Stephen Colbert’s The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past has reportedly been put on pause as Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery reshapes the studio’s priorities. Middle-earth remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable fantasy worlds. Peter Jackson’s adaptations established a distinct cinematic identity for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, making each new project a balancing act between revisiting familiar territory and finding stories audiences have yet to see.

However, the new chapter for Middle-earth may have to wait.

Knight Edge Media reports that the newly formed Skydance is pausing development amid leadership changes following the merger. Former Warner Bros. film chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy have left the company, making the creative future of The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past less certain. The film had been rumored to begin shooting in New Zealand after The Hunt for Gollum wrapped.

Stephen Colbert is known to be writing the film with his son, Peter McGee, and Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens. Conceived as a flashback story, it would draw on six chapters from The Fellowship of the Ring omitted from Peter Jackson’s film, including the Old Forest, the Barrow-downs and Tom Bombadil.

The project has not been canceled, and Colbert may continue working on drafts. However, filming is not expected anytime soon. The studio reportedly wants to see how The Hunt for Gollum performs before greenlighting further Tolkien projects, following the poor box-office showing of The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

The report also suggests the new leadership could consider moving beyond Jackson’s creative team. The Hunt for Gollum, already in production and armed with Aragorn, is expected to continue.

The project’s uncertain trajectory comes as a major Hollywood merger redraws the map of studio leadership and franchise priorities.

The merger changes the studio’s map

Paramount’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has cleared its final legal hurdle. On September 30, US District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín approved a settlement resolving an antitrust case brought by 12 state attorneys general, removing the last major obstacle to the deal. Now, Paramount is expecting the merger to close on October 6.

The settlement addressed concerns about competition in theatrical distribution and basic cable. The combined company agreed to increase US film production spending, meet minimum annual theatrical release commitments and preserve a 45-day theatrical window for wide releases. It also accepted safeguards for the editorial independence of CNN and CBS News.

For Stephen Colbert’s Tolkien film, the corporate shake-up has tangible creative consequences. Shadow of the Past remains in development, but its future now rests with executives reassessing the franchise’s value and direction. With The Hunt for Gollum serving as the next theatrical test, the project’s untold chapters will have to wait until the new studio decides whether they belong on the big screen.
