The Object of My Affection has long been remembered as a gentle, offbeat ’90s rom-com, powered by the easy, slightly melancholic chemistry between Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd. Their dynamic as a woman who falls for her gay best friend gave the film a different flavor than the era’s usual meet-cute romances and helped it become a cult favorite over time.
But now Stephen Baldwin has revealed that, in an alternate version of the movie, he was meant to be there instead of Rudd, until he was let go for what he describes as a strangely comic reason.

Talking on his podcast One Bad Movie, Stephen Baldwin said he arrived on set to play Vince McBride, Nina’s boyfriend, and quickly ran into unexpected pushback. Leading with his own blunt summary of the experience, he said he “was comically castrated” once the producers saw how he was playing the part.
"You can’t be funnier than Jennifer," Baldwin said.

On just the second day of shooting, a producer came to his trailer and delivered this note that changed everything. The actor recalled being stunned, pointing out that he’d been hired for a comedy and suddenly was being told to rein himself in. Baldwin said on the One Bad Movie podcast that he tried to adjust, returning to the set and deliberately flattening his comedic energy to keep the peace.
“You hired me to play a role, and now you’re telling me not to play that role,” describing the criticism as feeling like being “mauled in the face by a f*****g wolverine.”
By his account, the experiment didn’t last long: after that day, he was quietly dismissed and told he could go home, with the role eventually recast with John Pankow. Baldwin stressed that he wasn’t trying to attack Aniston personally. Still, he wanted to illustrate how, in his view, “Hollywood’s Hollywood,” a place where egos, branding, and star hierarchies can override performance in ways that still sting decades later.
That moment from the past also highlights how Baldwin’s career has moved in a very different direction since then.
A career path shaped by faith and independent storytelling
In recent years, Stephen Baldwin has focused largely on smaller, faith-based productions. Projects like A Carpenter’s Prayer and Church People reflect a shift away from mainstream studio roles. These films often see him working not just as an actor, but sometimes as a producer as well. This direction aligns with his broader personal outlook. In multiple interviews, Baldwin has spoken about using film to express his Christian faith.

At the same time, his presence has extended into reality and unscripted television. He has hinted at the possibility of appearing on The Baldwins, a show associated with his brother, Alec Baldwin who is starring next to Chris Hemsworth for his next grand project. That suggests his on-screen future may include a mix of personal and family-driven projects.
Public listings of upcoming work remain limited. While some independent films may be in development, widely confirmed details are scarce. This reflects the nature of smaller productions, which often operate outside the visibility of major studio pipelines.
