2014's Best Actor at the Academy Awards, Matthew McConaughey, is known to have started losing his eyesight as he prepped for his role as Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey is the kind of actor willing to go the extra mile for a character. But to what length was he actually willing to go was tested while he prepared for his Oscar-winning role in this particular 2013 movie. He went to the edge of method acting, trying to showcase the physical toll his character suffers in the movie.

While this dedication worked for the film, it nearly cost him his eyesight about which he opened up after the movie.

In 2013, Matthew McConaughey left everyone speechless by flaunting his extremely trim figure after losing 47 pounds for his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club. But it did not come without a cost. At the time, the actor told ExtraTV while talking about his weight loss for the movie that he started losing his eyesight after shedding 43 pounds.

"Once I got down to where I lost at 43 pounds, I did start losing my eyesight and I noticed it acutely. I mean it had to do with the weight loss,” McConaughey said.

Similarly, a report by EntertainmentWise claimed that the Hollywood star may have gone too far with his weight loss for his role of an AIDS patient, Ron Woodroof, in Dallas Buyers Club because he "very nearly lost his sight" as a result. An insider revealed the details of the situation to the publication.

"Matthew lost nearly 50 pounds and toward the end he started to lose his eyesight," said a source close to the actor.

According to the source, McConaughney saw doctors right away, and they verified that starvation causes visual loss. The insider told the publication that it was fortunately, temporary. They kept an eye on him, and things soon returned to normal. However, the actor's representative had informed EntertainmentWise at the time that the allegations had "no truth."

But McConaughey confirmed it in his own words, and he once also revealed his family’s reaction to his appearance while preparing for the film.

In a previous interview, actor Matthew McConaughey talked about how his friends and family were concerned about him after he dropped 47 pounds to play Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. To showcase the ordeal the character is going through in the film, the actor dropped a significant amount of weight - a change that scared his close ones, especially his daughter.

“My daughter was looking at me, and she said, ‘Why is your neck long like a giraffe?’ The giraffe’s neck was the only comment I got from them,” the actor had recalled (via IMdb).

He further added that the people close to him witnessed the change every day. However, when he went to see someone whom he had not seen in months, they would be visibly and verbally concerned. However, the concern only hardened his confidence that he had achieved the weight Ron needed to be in the film. Speaking about the present, the actor is right now very much involved in politics, taking it on with the same dedication that he takes his characters with.
