'Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord': Cast, Plot, Release Date and Everything You Need to Know

One of the most dangerous antagonists in Star Wars, Darth Maul, is set to return with his double-bladed lightsaber to wreak havoc. After The Clone Wars and Rebels, the new show, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, will focus on Maul’s journey, set a year after The Clone Wars. Director Brad Rau explained that the series will finally explore the character in depth and bring new details of his story to life. 

Now, before the show arrives on streaming, here is everything you need to know about the cast, plot, and release date.

The Plot of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is set after Order 66 and at the end of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The series follows Darth Maul as he begins rebuilding his criminal empire on the planet Janix while plotting revenge against Emperor Palpatine. In his journey, he meets an Order 66 survivor and Jedi Padawan, Devon Izara.

“But there's so much nuance to this character anytime he shows up,” Supervising Director Brad Rau told Empire.

For one of the darkest chapters of Star Wars, the show also brought an interesting cast. 

The Cast of Star Wars: Maul: Shadow Lord

For the franchise's 'coolest villain,' the cast built for this particular deep-dive comes straight from the hands of the original creator's apprentice, Dave Filoni. And while the mastermind stays constant, it seems the voice of the star antagonist does too. 

Sam Witwer as Maul: Sam Witwer lent his voice to the character Maul in the previous shows, The Clone Wars and Rebels.

Dennis Haysbert, David W. Collins, Chris Diamantopoulos, Charlie Bushnell, Steve Blum, and A. J. LoCascio are also part of the cast. The debut trailer for Maul: Shadow Lord is already out. Although the voices cannot be recognized in the trailer, the visuals from the show have caught fans’ attention.

The release date of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord

The first two episodes of the series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will drop on April 6, 2026, on Disney+. The two parts are titled The Dark Revenge and Sinister Schemes. The remaining episodes of the series, Whispers in the Unknown, Pride and Vengeance, Inquisition, Night of the Hunted, Call to the Oblivion, The Creeping Fear, Strange Allies, and Finale, will be released weekly up till May 4.

Even before the first season premieres, a second season of the show has already been confirmed, clearly indicating that there is much more of Darth Maul’s story to explore. Until then, it remains to be seen what twists and turns await in Season 1 of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
