'Star Trek: Starfleet Academy' Episode 2 Recap: A New Semester, Old Tensions, and One Galaxy-Sized Decision

Published 01/16/2026, 12:42 AM EST

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy had a slower but not less tense momentum, as the previous episode delved into Caleb Mir’s haunting backstory and revealed Nahla Reyes’ return as Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, rekindling her complex connection with Caleb. Their reunion highlighted lingering tensions, unspoken alliances, and the weight of past decisions, setting the stage for heightened stakes within the Academy.

In the coming episode, Caleb and Nahla have to confront even more obstacles when foreign representatives arrive to conduct delicate interstellar negotiations.

Fall Semester arrives with phasers set to honest

Nahla Ake opens the fall semester as if Starfleet Academy has survived on borrowed time. Her speech frames revival as an obligation, briskly reminding cadets and instructors that curiosity, not nostalgia, will decide whether Starfleet deserves to continue. As her charismatic address continues, glimpses of Academy life unfold in parallel. The Doctor confidently leads xenobiology, a subject where Caleb Mir visibly recoils, especially when paired with an overly eager cadet obsessed with furangle-horned tapeworms slated for next semester.

In other classes, tension between Caleb Mir and Darem continues to build. Darem, never subtle, repeatedly jabs at Caleb for sending a message to his “mommy,” ensuring the rivalry follows him beyond a single lecture hall. Meanwhile, Luna Krok appears to enjoy teaching far too much. She gleefully informs cadets they will face death, insists that death has eyes, and screams inches from one cadet’s face before watching them flee. She smugly notes that runners always reveal themselves early.

Surprise, Surprise, Caleb gets into trouble again

Caleb sits with Sam and Kragg, already exhausted by a semester that has barely begun, wihses he could go back to prison instead. When Sam remarks that prison would involve fingers being chopped off one by one, Caleb replies that prison sounds easier than another class. Meanwhile, room assignments bring out Caleb’s most endearing flaw: misplaced priorities. He worries about how anyone is supposed to hook up with roommates nearby, a concern impressively trivial given what is about to be revealed.

Genesis joins them in the corridor and offers sharp, unsolicited advice. She warns Caleb not to hook up with anyone for six months, explaining that rushing intimacy is the fastest way to identify a psycho. The two stop together, briefly convincing Caleb they have been assigned the same room. The assignment board kills that hope. Caleb is not paired with Genesis but with Darem, his most persistent adversary. Genesis ends up directly across the hall, quietly setting the stage for a potential love triangle.

Elsewhere, Nahla Ake actively flees a conversation with the Doctor, who is far too enthusiastic about vanilla mucus viscosity. She redirects straight into Luna Krok’s orbit to discuss preparations for an upcoming Federation banquet. That calm dissolves the moment Nahla enters her office and hears raised voices. Caleb and Darem are already there, arguing loudly and in unison about the same thing: neither is willing to share a room with the other.

Darem complains broadly. Caleb gets specific, snapping that Darem says the word “Hoisha” every minute and that it is unbearable. Nahla dryly observes that shared irritation may be their only common ground. She dismisses Darem and orders Caleb to stay. Alone with him, Nahla sharpens her tone. She confronts Caleb about his repeated attempts to hack exits and tells him plainly that if he truly wants to find his mother, the Federation is his only viable path forward.

Still, even Nahla's words could not put a rein on Caleb. No wonder, Luna Krok, who was watching the exchange with interest, strongly expressed the desire to beat Caleb up if given permission.

Nahla’s Darem

Charles Vance introduces Captain Kelring to Nahla Ake, and the meeting sours almost immediately. They start on the wrong foot, coincidentally because Nahla, ever the one to usher chaos, is barefoot. Kelring reminds her that protocol prefers shoes, prompting Nahla to explain her fondness for freedom and exposed pinky toes.

The disagreement escalates when Nahla proposes allowing cadets to attend the Federation meeting. Vance objects, arguing that children would unsettle President Sadal and weaken a gathering meant to solidify the Federation’s standing. Nahla counters that these cadets are not children but ambassadors of a new generation. Witnessing diplomacy firsthand, she argues, will teach conflict resolution better than any lecture.

Vance responds with a diplomatic delay, suggesting they consult President Sadal first and promising limited access if approved. Once safely out of his sight, Nahla communicates her feelings to Commander Kelring with a light swat on the arm.

Caleb’s meltdown

A new instructor, Jett Reno, enters the classroom and immediately establishes herself as someone who can teach sarcasm as efficiently as temporal mechanics. Spotting Caleb not paying attention, she calls him out for posturing like a know-it-all. Caleb claims he does not need temporal mechanics. Reno orders him to stand and introduce himself properly, then launches into a blunt lecture about connection. She dismisses his claim that he does not need anyone and ends by noting that intelligence without wisdom never helps.

Trying to escape quickly, Caleb collides with Sam at the exit, spilling xenobiology mucus onto himself. A nurse arrives and sprays him with a fire-extinguisher-like substance, leaving him covered in white foam as Darem watches gleefully and declares his love for classes. Still spiraling, Caleb heads for the fence, only to be stopped by a dreamy girl with functional eyesight. She points out that he looks reckless, questions his jacket, and gently reminds him that claiming uncertainty while standing on a fence is not convincing.

He climbs down, irritated but pleased to be noticed, and rushes to ask her name. But before he could do so the guards arrived, demanding to know why he was trying to escape.

Negotiations with President Sadal go south

Negotiations do not go as Starfleet hopes. President Sadal places firm demands on the table in exchange for lowering Betazed’s defensive walls, shifting the meeting from ceremonial to combative. The mood briefly lightens when Caleb is brought in with guards. He manages to earn a motherly glare from Nahla, annoy the Doctor with his zipper, and draw laughs at the same time. As he averts his eyes, he realizes the girl from the fence is Tarima Sadal, the President’s daughter.

During a short recess, the President’s children request a tour of the Academy to better understand Starfleet. Officials agree instantly. Relief turns to horror when Tarima asks Caleb to be their guide. Back in her office, Nahla tells Caleb to keep his curiosity holstered, reminding him this is a matter of the galaxy, not a personal side quest. Caleb agrees on one condition: access to the stellar cartography lab.

The tour becomes flirtatious. Caleb learns more about Tarima, her responsibility to her people, and her life confined entirely to Betazed. Her claim that she does not want to leave raises his suspicion. Trust earns them access to the cartography lab. With Tarima’s help, Caleb uncovers a map pointing to Gojo V, the planet he believes his mother is on. He admits he is searching for someone there, offering no further details.

They return just in time for negotiations to collapse. To cheer Tarima up, Caleb takes her to the aquarium with the humpback whales, remembering her fondness for them. What could have been romantic turns awkward and heated when President Sadal catches them almost kissing. President Sadal saw that moment as a clear sign of disrespect.

The banquet and its aftermath

The next day brings a banquet so grand it dares diplomacy to behave. Alas, it does not. Nahla puts the president on the defensive by urging him to tear down his walls. Elsewhere, Tarima and Caleb argue over his lingering distrust, ending the night badly. After a day of crippling negotiations, Nahla visits Caleb’s room for yet another heart-touching conversation. And just as she is about to leave the room, clarity hits the two when Caleb notes that in physics, when something fails, you build something new.

That idea becomes policy. As the Betazoids prepare to leave, Caleb convinces Tarima to bring her father back. Nahla proposes a bold compromise: the new Federation headquarters will be built on Betazed, not Earth. President Sadal removes his voice chip and says “Yes,” rejoining the Federation. Nahla later follows up on the Gojo V lead, revealing that Caleb’s mother’s file was encrypted and routed through the Romoff Sector three months earlier.

These events have a domino effect on the later choices. Tarima, who was given courage by Caleb, enrolls in the War College to defend Betazad. Meanwhile, her brother Ocam joins Starfleet Academy as the third roommate to Caleb and Darem. Caleb's high is brought down a little when he finds that, but when Ocam gave him the bracelet that Tarima left for him, one could see a notable change in him. The episode ends on an optimistic note as Darem and Ocam help Caleb make his bed, rivalry easing into something like trust.
