Marvel vs. DC was a possibility that everyone knew going into 2026. The slate already listed Supergirl and Spider-Man: Brand New Day for July, and it was generally expected that both films would at some point fight for box office share when their theatrical runs collide with each other. Contrary to earlier speculations, though, this clash is going to be rather one-sided. The DC movie for which everyone was once hyped has proved to be a bomb at the box office. And now fresh reports suggest that it will suffer more hardships as the new Spider-Man movie releases.

It is predicted that Brand New Day will outgross Supergirl in a single weekend, which almost annihilates any question of competition between the two films.

In a recent report by Boxoffice Pro, it was revealed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking to debut closer to No Way Home’s opening weekend, which was $260.1 million. Their forecasting panel has predicted, based on the upcoming movie’s pre-sales and the hype created by its marketing run, that it should still provide theaters a pleasant lift as they wrap up the summer even if it fails to match No Way Home’s numbers.

Supergirl, on the other hand, has just managed to amass over $107 million globally since its release on June 26. And with reports suggesting a record-breaking third-week drop of about 60% - 70% in its box office, it seems impossible for the movie to come anywhere near Brand New Day’s predicted numbers.

Supergirl has not performed up to par in July, and Moana is on her way to doing the same this weekend. Franchise IP has had a difficult start to the month. But Brand New Day just might help with this depressing trend and pull the audience back to the theaters. Furthermore, if Brand New Day can encourage repeat viewings over the relatively quiet month of August, Sony's decision to push it to the end of the month may prove to be a wise one.

Interestingly, the makers of the movie are doing everything they can with the marketing run of the film to ensure it goes beyond its predecessors in terms of box office.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s insane marketing campaign

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day marketing campaign has created massive global buzz ahead of its July 31 theatrical release. The craziest thing they did to promote the movie was to launch a viral teaser featuring Lionel Messi. It was a clever movie to capitalize on the ongoing FIFA World Cup hype.

Other promotional efforts include an interactive “Spidey Tracker” website developed with Samsung and massive retail integrations across Amazon. These efforts clearly signal Marvel’s all-out efforts to hit a home run with the most profitable franchise in its universe. This hype will surely drown the poor word of mouth of Supergirl, leading to Brand New Day sweeping the DC movie completely.
