South Park has spent nearly three decades proving that no sacred cow is safe once Trey Parker and Matt Stone decide to drag it into the writers' room. From celebrity feuds and presidential absurdities to Scientology and the occasional Canadian existential crisis, the show has made political satire feel less like a lecture and more like watching civilization trip over its own shoelaces. Now, as the series heads toward Season 29, its latest joke has landed squarely on Donald Trump, with Paramount getting caught in the blast radius.

The new gag is exactly the kind of bureaucratic absurdity South Park has perfected, except this time the paperwork itself is the punchline.

As South Park heads into its 29th season this month, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have announced that the show is changing its name to South America. The joke is aimed at Donald Trump's repeated attempts to rename landmarks and geographical entities, including his push to replace established names with ones carrying an unmistakably Trumpian brand.  But Parker and Stone did not stop at the White House. 

“Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount — a Skydance Capitulation,” the creators said in a statement.

As per Deadline, they also managed to fire a shot directly at the corporation that owns the very network carrying their show. It is particularly fitting given that Paramount owns Comedy Central and Paramount+, where the new season will premiere September 16. The joke therefore works on two levels. Trump gets mocked for his obsession with renaming things, while Paramount gets the sort of corporate side-eye that sounds polite right up until the last three words.

And if South Park has taught television anything, it is that the funniest insults are often the ones delivered with a straight face.

The name-change stunt arrives almost immediately after South Park landed another Donald Trump punchline at the Emmys. The series won Outstanding Animated Program for Sermon On The 'Mount, its fifth victory in the category, after spending its recent seasons turning Trump into one of its most relentless targets.  The victory celebration was pure Parker and Stone. 

Rather than simply post a conventional congratulations, South Park shared a graphic of its Trump character holding an Emmy with his pants down and the words, “You finally got your Emmy.” It was a particularly pointed callback because Trump had been nominated twice for The Apprentice in 2004 and 2005, losing both times.

That makes the joke more than a random Trump gag. The show has been mining Trump's complicated relationship with awards television for years, and Trump has returned the favor by repeatedly attacking the Emmys. In 2012, after The Apprentice failed to win, he called the Emmys a “total joke” and claimed they had “no credibility,” while arguing that politics kept his show from winning.
