Nicolas Winding Refn’s surreal psychological thriller Her Private Hell may have premiered out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, but it still completely electrified the Grand Théâtre Lumière on Monday night. Following its official Cannes premiere on May 18, the film received a massive 12-minute standing ovation, instantly becoming one of the loudest audience reactions of the festival so far. During the emotional celebration, director Nicolas Winding Refn also reflected on surviving a near-death experience and described returning to Cannes with the film as one of the most personal moments of his filmmaking journey.
“That changes you. When I was brought back to life with electricity, that I’m alive again; I only have 25 years of my life to live. But I’m going to make damn use of that to live life to the fullest. To make this film again and be back at Cannes where I came from is a huge step for mankind.” Refn told in his 3 minute Cannes speech.
As the applause continued filling the theatre, Refn and the cast reportedly kept cheering and encouraging the crowd, stretching the emotional celebration even further. However, Her Private Hell features an ensemble cast including Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu. Set inside a futuristic Los Angeles-like metropolis, the surreal thriller follows a glamorous group of women preparing to shoot a Barbarella-inspired sci-fi film before chaos erupts with the arrival of a mysterious k***** known as Leather Man lurking through the shadows.
However, if Cannes seemed hooked only on Thatcher’s emotional 12-minute ovation, the festival quickly delivered another explosive moment after director Na Hong-jin’s ambitious alien invasion thriller Hope earned a roaring six-minute standing ovation inside the Palais.
Na Hong-jin’s Hope quickly became another major Cannes talking point
From its opening stretch, Hope reportedly threw Cannes audiences directly into brutal alien-fuelled chaos and quickly emerged as one of the festival’s wildest premieres. Directed by Na Hong-jin, the ambitious sci-fi thriller earned a roaring six-minute standing ovation inside the Palais after stunning viewers with its mix of relentless destruction, bizarre humor, and large-scale invasion spectacle. The reaction instantly pushed the film into becoming one of Cannes 2026’s breakout titles.

Starring Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon Jung, Michael Fassbender, and Alicia Vikander, the film reportedly spends its opening 40 minutes unleashing nonstop attacks from mysterious extraterrestrial creatures, tearing apart a quiet mountain town. Yet despite all the carnage, audiences were equally caught off guard by the film’s absurd comedic swings, with several moments reportedly leaving the black-tie Cannes crowd loudly laughing inside the Palais.
While Cannes Film Festival continues flooding the internet with standing ovations, emotional speeches, and explosive premieres, Sophie Thatcher’s emotional Cannes moment still managed to become one of the festival’s most unforgettable highlights so far.
