The fiery dragons have made a special place for themselves in the world of Game of Thrones. And so has the company behind them in the entertainment industry. Pixomondo, a visual effects and virtual production company responsible for some of the most memorable scenes in Game of Thrones, The Boys, The Amazing Spider-Man, and House of the Dragon, may soon be saying its final goodbye.

Reports claim that Sony Pictures Entertainment has decided to shut down the company, nearly four years after acquiring it.

Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the company all the way back in 2022. And as reported by Televisual, Pixomondo will no longer exist as a separate brand. Meanwhile, some of its tools, skills, and perhaps even employees are reported to be shifted to work in different divisions.

Pixomondo was founded by Thilo Kuther in 2001 and has since worked on numerous major projects, becoming a well-known name in the industry. After its acquisition by Sony Pictures Entertainment, CEO Jonny Slow remained in his position. Now, the news of Sony shutting down such a major company comes as a shock to the industry.

The company won an Oscar for its work on Hugo and an Emmy for Game of Thrones, making it one of the most renowned VFX studios. And this news also raises questions about the future and scope of the VFX industry. While the award-winning company behind Game of Thrones faces a massive blow, the franchise itself continues to expand with new projects.

‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Offs Keep Up Spirits as ‘House of the Dragon’ Announces Season 3

A new movie based on the franchise is announced to have been in the works.

A Game of Thrones movie is in the works

It has been announced that Warner Bros. is developing a Game of Thrones movie. The studio has teamed up with writer Beau Willimon for his work, and it seems he has already submitted a draft. It is still early days, though, with no director or cast attached yet.

That said, the project’s future is not entirely locked. With Warner Bros. potentially merging with Paramount Skydance, there is a chance that new leadership could scrap films currently in development. But given that Game of Thrones is one of the studio’s biggest and most valuable franchises, it is unlikely they will not work on it.

The film is expected to follow the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, Aegon I Targaryen, and his journey. Game of Thrones’ previous spin-offs, such as House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, have been a success. So, while there is an interesting future for the series, one of the companies behind its success will not be joining it.
