Nothing terrifies modern nostalgia quite like an empty shelf. DVDs, music CDs, and physical collections have become fashionable again, celebrated as keepsakes rather than clutter. Sony, however, chose the perfect moment to swim against the tide. The company announced that every new PlayStation title released from January 2028 onward will exist only as a digital download, even while admitting players remain emotionally attached to physical game discs.

The outrage certainly found Sony's ears. Lin Tao heard the sentiment, nodded politely, and marched the digital-only future forward anyway.

Sony has politely informed PlayStation fans that the verdict was delivered long before the trial began. Speaking during the company's first-quarter 2026 earnings Q&A session, Chief Financial Officer Lin Tao revealed that the digital-only strategy had been under consideration for quite some time and is not heading back to the drawing board. January 2028 remains the point where new PlayStation releases leave physical discs behind.

According to Tao, the future had already picked its favorite format. With digital entertainment continuing to dominate and almost 80 percent of Sony's full game sales already arriving through downloads, the company believes the direction is inevitable. The roadmap has been carefully plotted, and Sony appears far more interested in following it than redrawing it.

“To this decision we have received various opinions, and people have strong views, and we understand that the community has put forward those views to us,” Tao said, while recognizing that PlayStation games often carry fond memories and emotional value for players. Yet Sony's attention has already shifted toward discovering new ways to engage gamers in the digital ecosystem it has chosen to build.

As Sony expands its Marvel universe, it seems the backlash towards them about PlayStation digitalization may have increased.

The increasing backlash against Sony

The backlash has only intensified since Sony unveiled its digital-only roadmap. The community-led 'Don't Kill the Disc' petition has now crossed 300,000 signatures, while Sony's announcement spread to more than 120 million views in just three days, with criticism flooding the replies. The frustration soon evolved beyond comments, with the #PSBlackout boycott campaign urging players to avoid PlayStation Network and digital purchases, alongside users publicly canceling PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra subscriptions.

The criticism extends far beyond nostalgia. Consumer advocates and preservation groups argue that digital-only libraries leave players vulnerable to delisted games, expired licenses, and account restrictions, unlike physical discs that can still be resold, archived, and played offline. Yet despite the mounting resistance, Sony has made it abundantly clear that the PlayStation disc era is still heading toward its January 2028 finale.
