Sony’s ‘GOAT’ Breaks Barriers With Historic All-Disability Loop Group

Just as Sony Pictures Animation continues stacking its slate with heavy hitters like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, the studio has already kicked off 2026 with a far more unexpected arena contender. GOAT, its high-energy animated sports comedy that charged into U.S. theaters on February 13, drops audiences into the thunderous world of roarball, a chaotic animal league where one undersized goat dares to chase impossible glory.
But amid the stadium roars, animated mayhem and underdog bravado, it is a group of extraordinarily talented performers with disabilities who are quietly stealing the spotlight, powering a groundbreaking initiative that turns the film’s crowd noise itself into a moment of Hollywood history.

Co-produced by NBA star Stephen Curry, Sony Pictures Animation’s 2026 animated sports comedy GOAT, featuring the voice of Caleb McLaughlin, has already carved out a historic moment in Hollywood by bringing together nearly two dozen performers with disabilities whose voices power its crowd soundscape, forming the first all-disability loop group ever used in a major studio film.
The initiative grew out of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge (EDFC), founded 13 years ago by actor and advocate Nic Novicki, with the effort eventually taking shape through a workshop on the Sony lot where participants trained before stepping into history with GOAT. Speaking about the cast recently, Novicki shared that the project finally gave these talented artists a chance to show what they can truly do.
“Like Will in ‘GOAT,’ these talented artists earned a chance to show what they can do,” said Novicki as per Variety.
Backed by Sony Pictures Entertainment for the past seven years, Novicki furthur shared that behind the microphone, disability holds no limits, because a performer’s true instrument is their voice, and with it they can transform into anything the story calls for.
“It doesn’t matter what your disability is or what you look like. Your voice is your instrument,” he said.
However, for Nic Novicki, this conviction has never been just theory. The actor himself recently voiced Lego Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, while fellow EDFC participant Danielle Perez, a wheelchair user, stepped into the Marvel universe as Sun-Spider after producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller discovered her through the challenge.
Following it, Novicki’s GOAT has already started gaining eyes as the rise of an “underdogoat,” with the $90 million animated spectacle now racing toward a projected $250 million global box office milestone. Here is everything you need to know about the Sony Pictures Animation’s GOAT.

Meanwhile, the underdog roarball spectacle has also been winning over viewers, earning a fresh critics score of around 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have pushed its approval even higher with a 93% rating. And if you think Sony is done making headlines, think again, as its new Spider-Man spin-off plans are already confirmed to rollout on 2027.
While Sony seems set to keep audiences hooked not only through 2026 but into 2027 as well, its initiative of bringing together an all-disability loop group for GOAT stands out as a breakthrough moment one that deserves nothing less than applause.
