Sony’s Spider-Man Universe has struggled at the box office in recent years. Kraven the Hunter grossed only $62 million in 2024, which was well short of Madame Web, which raked in at least $100 million. Unsurprisingly, Sony put a pause on its Spider-Man spinoffs.

Yet, these flops did not crush the hope. If anything, they have hinted at a much-needed change. So, after a string of disappointing box office misfires, Sony appears ready to start a new chapter for its Spider-Man Universe. 

Tom Rothman, who is the Chairman and CEO of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, recently sat for a conversation on The Town With Matt Belloni podcast. When asked if the Studio has any plans to return to the larger Spider-Verse, he responded positively and added that it would involve new actors.

This comes as little surprise, given that the previous films were heavily criticised for their characters, CGI, and dialogue, among other flaws. The studio found consistent box office success only with its Spider-Verse films in animation and the Venom trilogy. The trilogy earned hundreds of millions worldwide, while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has also performed well.

However, the noticeable drop in earnings for the third instalment of Venom shows the audience fatigue. The first film grossed an impressive $856 million globally, while Venom: The Last Dance collected only $478.9 million. However, this decline suggests that the franchise may benefit from a creative reset.

While speaking of a reset of SSU, Sony’s upcoming series, Spider-Noir could well signal the beginning of that shift.

While keeping hopes of a reboot alive, Sony Pictures Entertainment has turned its attention to television. The studio is now returning with Spider‑Noir. The series will follow Ben Reilly, a slightly older hero forced to confront his past when new troubles emerge.

Nicolas Cage, who plays Ben Reilly, will be joined by Li Jun Li and Lamorne Morris. The first trailer has already been released for fans, while the series is set to premiere on May 27.

Whether the show succeeds or not might influence how Sony approaches its next reboot. As such, Spider-Noir will be an interesting watch, not just for fans, but also seemingly for the future of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
