As Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its extraordinary theatrical run, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja has revealed the emotional reason audiences are connecting with the latest Spider-Man chapter so deeply. For generations, Spider-Man has been more than a superhero swinging between skyscrapers.
From comic-book pages to packed theaters, audiences have connected with Peter Parker because beneath the mask is someone painfully human, dealing with loneliness, loss, love, and impossible choices. The emotion has now been further canonized.
Brand New Day is striking an emotional chord
Superhero movies are expected to deliver spectacle, but Spider-Man: Brand New Day apparently leaves audiences carrying something heavier than popcorn and adrenaline. While speaking at the BofA Securities 2026 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in New York, Ravi Ahuja described the movie as “very emotional,” while acknowledging that it still delivers the enormous action sequences and entertainment audiences expect from a Spider-Man movie.
“It’s a lot of fun. But it’s emotional. Some people come away crying, so that is something clearly that resonated with the audience,” Ravi Ahuja said.

The numbers certainly make the case for Sony to celebrate.
“It is a tremendous result. We obviously had not forecast that. We thought it would do incredibly well, but we did not know that would do that well,” he acknowledged. As reported by Variety, the film has crossed $2.4 billion worldwide and ranks among the biggest theatrical releases ever.
For Ahuja, however, the real victory seems to be less about the billions and more about viewers walking out of theaters emotionally affected.
What drew the audience to Peter Parker's story in Brand New Day?
That emotional pull makes particular sense considering where Brand New Day finds Peter Parker. Following the devastating conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter exists in a world that no longer remembers him, while he watches people he once loved continue their lives without him. Sony describes the new chapter as the story of a Peter who has committed himself to fighting crime full-time, even as the pressure of isolation begins triggering a transformation he may not be able to control.

The result has clearly struck a nerve. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, the film has dominated theaters for six consecutive weeks and has reached $2.4 billion globally. Its success has also helped propel an unusually strong summer box office, proving that audiences still want theatrical spectacle when a blockbuster gives them something personal to hold onto.
For Spider-Man, perhaps that has always been the secret. The webs, villains and skyscrapers may bring audiences through the doors, but Peter Parker is the reason they stay emotionally invested. And if audiences are leaving theaters in tears, Ahuja may have identified exactly what makes this particular Spider-Man swing so high.
