Garrett Hedlund has finally offered a bit of good news for fans hoping to see Triple Frontier return for a sequel. The first film took a full decade to get off the ground, and bringing its star-studded cast back together for another round has been far from simple. In late 2023, Charlie Hunnam revealed that he had signed on as a main producer for Triple Frontier 2, but also made it clear that the project was still in its infancy. Now, Hedlund has shared a fresh update that could give the long-awaited sequel a much-needed nudge forward.

Garrett Hedlund shares a fresh look at Triple Frontier 2 possibilities
During an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns, Garrett Hedlund offered a fresh update on Triple Frontier 2. The actor admitted there were no confirmed answers as of now, but the sequel is “floating around." Hedlund did, however, hint that the project had made some headway during its earlier development.
While the team has already taken a pass at the script, the actor believes another round of revisions could help build momentum.
"They took a stab at the script, and I think when they sit down and take another one, there might be some momentum on it, but I feel like the theme is never say never."

The biggest problem is the cast’s packed schedules. Hedlund explained to ScreenRant that the cast’s schedules have made it difficult to move the sequel forward, particularly with Charlie Hunnam busy shooting one project after another. For now, he is not ruling out a reunion, even saying it would be “fun to get the band back together” for Triple Frontier 2.
It took almost 10 years to bring the first Triple Frontier to the screen, and its sequel seems to be following the same frustrating path.
A history of Triple Frontier delays
Long before Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal, or Oscar Isaac came on board, the original Triple Frontier went through a revolving door of A-list talent. The project was initially set up by director Kathryn Bigelow and, over the years, attracted some seriously big names, including Tom Hanks, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Will Smith.
However, each star eventually exited, leaving the film stuck in development limbo. Director J.C. Chandor eventually took the reins with Tom Hardy and Channing Tatum attached to lead the film.

Just a month before filming was set to begin, Hardy and Tatum bailed over creative differences following script rewrites. Paramount eventually pulled the plug as the budget ballooned, but Netflix later revived the project with a new cast led by Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pascal.
Even then, casting woes continued. Now, with Hunnam stepping in as a main producer to get Triple Frontier 2 off the ground, the sequel is headed down the same bumpy road.
