For a film that once had fans debating which DC universe it belonged to, Clayface has found a reason to bring the conversation full circle. Matt Reeves is now praising James Gunn and the film’s cast as the horror project wins over audiences and earns a Rotten Tomatoes score. Reeves and Mike Flanagan originally developed the idea as a spin-off for The Batman universe before Gunn and Peter Safran brought it into the main DCU.
Matt Reeves is singing the praises of James Gunn and the Clayface stars, proving that a little creative history need not spoil a good horror story.
Matt Reeves cheers on Clayface team
There was a time when Clayface left DC fans wondering which universe had shaped its origins, but Matt Reeves is now giving the film a moment in the spotlight. The filmmaker, who helped develop the project before it moved into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU, is praising Gunn and the cast as the horror film celebrates a 94% Rotten Tomatoes score.
“So proud of James and Tom and Naomi and everyone who worked so incredibly hard…,” he said complete with a little heart emoji.
Reeves posted the warm message on X to mark the film’s impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, publicly celebrating James Gunn, Tom Rhys Harries, Naomi Ackie, and the rest of the team. It is a gracious moment for a project whose origins once prompted plenty of speculation among DC fans about which cinematic universe would ultimately claim the shape-shifting villain.

The project began when Mike Flanagan brought Reeves a horror concept inspired by Feat of Clay, the celebrated Batman: The Animated Series episode. Initially envisioned as a spin-off from The Batman, the story eventually caught the attention of James Gunn and Peter Safran, who brought it into the main DCU. The universe changed, but Reeves’s enthusiasm for the finished film clearly did not, as seen from his X post.
While James Gunn did take over Clayface later on, Matt Reeves was still somehow a part of Clayface.
How Matt Reeves was involved in Clayface
Matt Reeves did not simply hand Clayface over to James Gunn and walk away when DC Studios began reshaping the franchise. Instead, the filmmaker, as a producer, remained closely involved as a hands-on producer alongside Gunn, Peter Safran, and Lynn Harris, helping preserve the project’s identity as a tragic, body-horror thriller. James Watkins directed the film, bringing that vision to life without folding it into Reeves’s ongoing Batman saga.

Although Clayface ultimately became part of Gunn’s main DCU rather than Robert Pattinson’s The Batman universe, Reeves’s creative involvement remained a crucial link between the two worlds. His enthusiasm for the finished film reflects the horror-focused approach he and Mike Flanagan originally pursued, making his public praise for Gunn and the cast especially meaningful as Clayface celebrates its 94% Rotten Tomatoes score.
