Deadpool co-creator Rob Liefeld has addressed the rumors about Josh Brolin returning as Cable in Deadpool 4. Brolin introduced Nathan Summers in Deadpool 2, then sat out 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which left many fans disappointed. Cable has waited in the wings ever since, and the rumor mill happily filled the silence. Naturally, the man who helped create the character had strong opinions and was not shy about sharing them.

The answer is wrapped in hope and humility, plus a calendar so full that even Cable needs a time machine.

Rob Liefeld cannot promise that Josh Brolin will return as Cable in Deadpool 4 just yet. At MultiCon 2026, he insisted that nobody wants Cable back in front of audiences more than he does.

“Maybe Cable is not something he’s interested in anymore, but I would hope, given the opportunity, he would return,” Liefeld said to The Direct.

He then added, “I think there was so much more meat on those bones.”

A July 2026 report claimed Ryan Reynolds wants Cable back in Deadpool 4 with other X-Men, and The Direct asked Liefeld about it. Liefeld joked that he could call Brolin right now, but not on camera. He rattled off Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Zach Cregger’s Weapons, and the upcoming Whalefall as proof that Brolin has options. Liefeld also called Deadpool The Karate Kid of Reynolds, with more films obviously coming.

While Josh Brolin keeps Hollywood guessing, Liefeld has an MCU exit story starting with a missing after-party invite and no hello.

Rob Liefeld’s Deadpool & Wolverine premiere snub led to his MCU exit

Rob Liefeld has alleged that Marvel head Kevin Feige mistreated him, and that claim sits behind his MCU resignation. The Deadpool creator stepped away after the July premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, but he only revealed the news later on his Robservations podcast. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he and his family were left off the guest list for the premiere’s afterparty, an omission he did not take lightly.

Feige was said to be standing nearby on the red carpet yet never acknowledged Liefeld, who described the act as meant to embarrass and diminish him. His professional photos with the film’s creative team were suddenly erased as well. In January 2025, Liefeld also claimed on X that Marvel Studios blocked Cable’s return in Deadpool & Wolverine, calling the decision an all-time b**** move. Brolin’s Cable may get another chance in Deadpool 4, but the road back still runs through the same studio Liefeld says closed the door once already.
