16 Years Later, Leonardo DiCaprio Returns to a Dark Psychological Thriller in Another Martin Scorsese Collaboration

Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are arguably one of Hollywood’s most loved actor-director duos. Whenever they collaborate, a masterpiece is born, and this has been the case since their first project together, Gangs of New York (2002). Since then, they have graced the fans with exemplary works like The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023).

Now, once again, they are all set to extend their collaboration with a kind of spiritual sequel to their 16-year-old dark psychological thriller.

Long-time collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese are gearing up for what seems like an unofficial follow-up to one of their most exciting endeavors from sixteen years ago. Deadline reports that DiCaprio will play the lead in Scorsese's adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel What Happens at Night, which tells the story of an American couple attempting to adopt a child while traveling to a strange hotel in Europe.

The new project, however, draws some parallels with the themes of the duo's celebrated 2010 classic Shutter Island, one of Scorsese’s biggest box-office bangers. What happens at Night, like the 2010 movie, hints at the horror elements that further add to their connection. This project might just surprise the audience as much as Shutter Island did.

Martin Scorsese is undoubtedly one of the best filmmakers working today; every one of his films is a big event, but What Happens at Night has the potential to be bigger than most. And with the inclusion of Jennifer Lawrence to the team - a team comprising multiple Oscar winners (Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Lawrence) - the sky is only the limit for this collaboration.

The plot of What Happens at Night further reinforces the sense that it carries the same vibe as its 2010 predecessor (if we can call it that).

A story thematically reminiscent of Shutter Island

What Happens at Night is set in a vast, mostly empty hotel with a cast of enigmatic individuals, including a charismatic spiritual healer, a corrupt businessman, and a flashy chanteuse. The main leads seem to have no choice but to go to this bizarre hotel and try to adopt a baby because Lawrence's character, who is only referred to as the lady in the book, is dying from cancer and has had several miscarriages in an attempt to leave her husband (Leonardo DiCaprio) with a child.

However, the longer the guy and the lady stay at the hotel, the more they start to lose their sense of themselves and reality. This is a striking similarity to the plot of Shutter Island; there, it was an island, and here it is a hotel. So, following on from the information we have, Martin Scorsese’s ghost story adaptation is supposed to be depressing, frightening, and emotionally terrifying, but in a way that might be deeply engrossing and enthralling.
