Simon Pegg has faced rogue AI, impossible missions, and enough near-death experiences to make anyone consider a career change. Fresh off Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in May 2025, where he reprised Benji Dunn, the IMF's technical whiz turned seasoned field agent, Pegg is trading high-stakes espionage for Hollywood chaos in My Phone Died. The dark comedy marks a return to the apocalyptic antics that have long been his cinematic comfort zone.

This time, Pegg plays a Hollywood agent, but navigating the entertainment industry might prove tricky when the world itself is falling apart.

Simon Pegg is trading impossible missions for a phone-induced apocalypse, and somehow, the new assignment sounds just as dangerous. According to Variety, the actor is set to star in My Phone Died, a dark comedy in which he plays Gus, a Hollywood agent who narrowly escapes a global catastrophe after smartphones begin exploding worldwide. Apparently, even surviving Hollywood requires dodging a few explosions.

The apocalypse leaves behind an unlikely group of survivors, including an Amish woman, a social media influencer, a pregnant agoraphobic wannabe actress, and her shotgun-wielding addict mother. Mark Duplass plays one of Gus's self-absorbed clients who does not survive the phone disaster, while Haley Joel Osment portrays a recovering alcoholic and influencer. Hannah Leder and Alexandra Kotcheff round out the ensemble as Francis and Lillie, respectively.

As Variety reported, the film comes from filmmaking duo Hannah Leder and Alexandra Kotcheff, who will write, direct, and star in the project. The pair previously collaborated on the acclaimed 2019 indie comedy-drama The Planters. With production expected to begin in spring 2027, My Phone Died promises a distinctly absurd take on the apocalypse, where the end of civilization might just offer some survivors a fresh start.

Simon Pegg's affiliation with apocalyptic comedy

Simon Pegg has developed a rather enviable knack for finding humor when civilization is falling apart. From battling a zombie outbreak in Shaun of the Dead to discovering an alien invasion during a hometown pub crawl in The World's End, the actor has repeatedly turned humanity's worst nightmares into comedy gold. Apparently, the end of the world is never quite the end of the laughs.

His apocalyptic adventures have also stretched into dystopian territory with Ready Player One, while Slaughterhouse Rulez brought subterranean monsters and boarding-school mayhem into the mix. With My Phone Died, Pegg returns to the deliciously disastrous territory he knows so well, proving that when the world goes spectacularly wrong, he is never far from a punchline.
