The wholesome tearjerker Shrinking is not going away anytime soon. After two heartfelt seasons of the dramedy, Apple TV+ has already confirmed a season 4 for the show, well before Season 3 even premiered. However, the real shock came at the end of Season 3, which left Jimmy alone in his empty home, learning to deal with life on his own.

The moment felt almost like a fitting conclusion to the story and its characters. As many might find it intriguing, co-creator Bill Lawrence has explained the reason behind that ending.

During his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shrinking co-creator Bill Lawrence was asked about the ending of season 3. In response, he explained that season 3 was initially supposed to be the ending of the show, with the first dealing with grief, the second focusing on forgiving, and the third was about moving forward in life.

“This is the finale of that three-season story. And I hope that people will dig it that when we come back — whether there’s a time jump or not — that it’ll feel like we’re telling a completely different story,” he said.

Lawrence explained that fans would not wish to watch Jimmy deal with the same issue with his grief in season 4. As the team found out about the renewal while working on season 3, they decided to stay true to the vision. Now, after bringing an end to the first chapter, the show could turn in a new direction.

And as the co-creator hinted, there will be a time jump in the show.

Bill Lawrence also reassured fans that the entire cast, including Harrison Ford, will return for Season 4 of Shrinking. However, the new season will include a time jump. While the show has used time jumps before, this one is expected to be slightly bigger than previous ones, hinting at a new chapter for the characters’ journeys.

“This [jump to season four] will definitely be significant and beyond a year or two,” he said.

Lawrence further clarified that Season 4 is not the end for Shrinking. While he did not reveal the plan for the show’s full run, he assured that the creative team already has at least a fifth season in mind. With a fresh new journey and multiple seasons likely in mind, Shrinking has plenty more to explore.
