Speaking on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Tim Robbins reflected on reuniting with Tom Cruise and working with Steven Spielberg on War of the Worlds. Yet the detail he remembered most vividly involved Fanning, who was around 10 during production.

“What I remember the most was how Dakota looked like an adult to me,” Robbins said. He explained that her presence on set felt unusually mature, describing her as “so professional and so concentrated.” For Robbins, she carried herself like an experienced actress despite being a child.

That quality mattered because War of the Worlds demanded intense performances from its young cast. Fanning played Rachel Ferrier, the daughter of Cruise’s Ray Ferrier, as the family attempts to survive an alien invasion. Her character faces terror, separation, and increasingly frightening situations, requiring Fanning to sustain emotional intensity throughout the film.

Robbins’ recollection at the podcast also offers a glimpse into why Fanning became such a respected child performer. Her early work was already earning attention before Spielberg’s film, and War of the Worlds placed her opposite two heavyweight talents. That reunion is especially timely because the Fanning sisters are finally preparing to share the screen in a major film of their own.

Dakota and Elle Fanning will appear together for the first time in The Nightingale, a historical drama adapted from Kristin Hannah’s bestselling 2015 novel. Michael Morris directs the film from a screenplay by Dana Stevens. Dakota plays Vianne, while Elle portrays her sister Isabelle.

The story follows two women taking different paths through German-occupied France during World War II as they fight for survival, freedom, and the people they love. The project has particular significance because the actresses have spent their entire careers working separately despite growing up in the same industry.

The film also gives both sisters a role behind the scenes. Dakota and Elle are among the producers, working alongside Reese Witherspoon and others through their production company, Lewellen Pictures. The collaboration marks a major milestone in their careers. After production in Budapest, The Nightingale is scheduled for a March 19, 2027 theatrical release in the United States.
