Barbie Land was already so crowded with A-listers that calling it star-studded almost felt like an understatement. For Barbie, Greta Gerwig had Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling at the center, but even the Barbies, Kens, narrator and Mattel boss came with names like Kate McKinnon, Helen Mirren and Will Ferrell attached. The movie was practically handing out famous faces with every plastic accessory.

And yet, the celebrity-packed cast could have squeezed in Saoirse Ronan and another star in the mix as well.

Saoirse Ronan could have been Barbie

Two years ago, Saoirse Ronan dropped a very pink piece of casting gossip on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The actress revealed that Greta Gerwig, whom she had worked with on Little Women, had asked her to join Barbie as Weird Barbie, while Timothée Chalamet was also supposed to be part of the plastic party. Both stars ultimately had other commitments, leaving Barbie Land one very weird duo short.

“I was supposed to be in Barbie. She had asked me to be in that, yeah,” she said.

Ronan explained that the plan was for her and Kate McKinnon to spend around 20 minutes being weird together. Honestly, that sounds like exactly the sort of glorious nonsense Barbie Land was built for. The actress did not hide her disappointment either, admitting that she was still devastated she missed out on the film. It was a tiny casting detail with major pink-party potential.

Jimmy Kimmel then asked who Timothée Chalamet was supposed to play, and Ronan did not have a very definitive answer. Her best guess was Weird Ken, which feels almost too perfect for the movie that eventually gave the world countless Kens. Whatever the role might have been, Jimmy Kimmel was left with a wonderfully strange alternate version of Barbie Land.

While Saoirse Ronan is busy dispelling her husband’s James Bond rumors now, she was too busy for Barbie back then, and so was Timothée Chalamet, thanks to these projects.

The projects that kept Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet from Barbie

Timothée Chalamet was not exactly sitting around waiting for another role when Barbie came calling. He was filming Wonka on the same studio lot, busy becoming Willy Wonka for Paul King’s musical prequel. The $125 million production eventually became a $634 million-plus worldwide hit, proving that Chalamet had plenty of chocolate-coated business to handle.

Saoirse Ronan, meanwhile, was heading in an entirely different direction with The Outrun. She starred as Rona and made her producing debut on the intimate drama, filming in Scotland as the story followed a woman rebuilding her life after addiction. The film earned Ronan a BAFTA nomination and major acclaim, making both missed Barbie roles rather understandable in retrospect.
