Shawn Hatosy did not hold back when reflecting on the earlier chapters of his career. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, he opened up about the parts that got away before he found steady footing on television.

"There were so many actors that I would brush up against," Hatosy said, recalling roles that slipped through his fingers decades ago.

"Tobey Maguire was one of them," he added, naming Wonder Boys and Cider House Rules as titles that nearly featured him instead of Maguire.

American Beauty came next, a role Hatosy admitted he "really wanted," though it ultimately went to Wes Bentley.

Missed opportunities did not end with Wonder Boys, Cider House Rules, or American Beauty, according to details shared with The Hollywood Reporter. Hatosy also confirmed he once auditioned for the role that eventually went to Aaron Paul on Breaking Bad, at a time when AMC had barely established itself as a serious network. Prestige cable dramas carried nowhere near the cultural weight they hold today, so Hatosy was not particularly eager to pursue the part.

While those early auditions defined roles he never played, one project he did take set up a reunion decades later.

Shawn Hatosy and Jimmy Fallon revisit their Factory Girl days

A few months ago, Jimmy Fallon and Shawn Hatosy reunited on The Tonight Show and revisited their shared history on the 2006 drama Factory Girl, two decades after the film wrapped. Fallon played Chuck Wein while Hatosy portrayed Syd Pepperman, and the pair spent much of the segment laughing about questionable hairstyles from the costume department. Their friendship was forged after hours in Shreveport, Louisiana, where the cast had little else to do but bond.

The Neil Diamond detour sealed the legend, with Fallon buying a Greatest Hits CD mid-ride and rehearsing 'Heartlight' all the way to set. Hatosy also used the appearance to tease The Pitt Season 3, confirming he directed episode nine and hinting the season would open differently than before. For Hatosy, roles lost and friendships gained seem to carry equal weight in a career built on both.
