One of the most dysfunctional and bizarre families becomes the focus in the U.S. version of the dark comedy Shameless. As the title suggests, the Gallaghers are unique, with each family member having their own way of coping with life’s challenges. From scandals and substance abuse to petty crimes, the series explores the chaotic lives of a working-class family trying to survive on Chicago’s South Side. 

The show, starring Emmy Rossum and William H. Macy, became a massive hit and ran for several seasons before concluding in 2021. Now, more than five years later, where can viewers watch Shameless again or watch the Gallagher family’s chaos for the first time?

The U.S. version of Shameless has 11 seasons, all of which are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV. The show follows the drama and chaos surrounding the working-class Gallagher family. While the father of six, Frank Gallagher, is an alcoholic, his wife has left the family due to her own struggles, leaving the eldest sibling, Fiona, to look after her brothers and sisters.

As the children deal with their lives without much parental guidance, they face new hurdles every day, going from scams and family drama to petty crimes. William H. Macy stars as Frank Gallagher, while Fiona is played by Emmy Rossum. Justin Chatwin plays Steve Wilton, Fiona’s love interest during the first three seasons.

He later returned as a guest star in Seasons 4 and 5. Jeremy Allen White, Cameron Monaghan, and Emma Kenney are also part of the cast. With episodes running between 44 and 60 minutes, the series premiered in 2011 and concluded with its final episode in 2021 after 11 seasons. Now, as many know, the U.S. version is an adaptation of the hit British series of the same name.

Although both adaptations share the same theme and heart, there are several differences between the two versions.

While both the U.S. and UK versions of Shameless focus on a dysfunctional family living in poverty as they struggle to survive, the tone and cultural setting are different in each adaptation. The UK version also has much less censorship, allowing it to be more explicit in its portrayal of certain themes. Another major difference between the two shows is the family.

Many of the family members in the UK version eventually leave the show. For instance, Fiona does not appear in Season 3. However, the Gallagher family in the U.S. version largely stays together throughout the series. Although Fiona eventually leaves the U.S. version, it does not happen until Season 9.

Most importantly, Frank Gallagher has a very different fate in the two adaptations. In the U.S. version, Frank dies from complications related to COVID-19. However, the character gets a happier ending in the UK version. Ultimately, while both shows share the same heart and explore similar themes, they take different routes with their characters and stories, making each version unique and worth watching.
