Another major shake-up is unfolding behind the scenes at The Young and the Restless. After helping shape the drama in Genoa City for years, head writer Josh Griffith has officially decided to step away from one of the most influential creative roles on daytime television. While his departure won’t take effect immediately, it leaves one major question hanging over the long-running soap: what’s next for The Young and the Restless?

According to TV Insider, Josh Griffith’s decision to step down was entirely his own, with the cast and crew learning about the news on June 26. Although his resignation won’t take effect immediately, CBS has yet to announce when his final episodes will air or who will succeed him as head writer. The news comes just weeks after Griffith also stepped away from his role as co-executive producer to focus solely on writing.

While TV Insider’s report has now confirmed the end of Griffith’s latest chapter at The Young and the Restless, Griffith first joined the CBS soap in 2006. The writer began his soap journey with Santa Barbara in 1988 before moving to One Life to Live, where he eventually became co-head writer and earned a Daytime Emmy in 1994. He later co-created Sunset Beach in 1997, contributed to As the World Turns and Days of Our Lives, and returned to The Young and the Restless in 2018, ultimately taking over as head writer in 2019. With no successor named yet, his departure marks one of the biggest behind-the-scenes shakeups the long-running soap has faced in recent years.

While Griffith’s next chapter may be uncertain, his years in Genoa City have already left behind some of The Young and the Restless’ most suspenseful, emotionally charged, and unforgettable storylines.

Throughout his tenure as head writer, Griffith blended the show’s signature family feuds with darker, mystery-driven storytelling, delivering some of its most talked-about arcs. From Nick and Sharon’s high-stakes Los Angeles mission and Matt Clark’s shocking return to Claire Newman’s long-hidden identity and the relentless Victor Newman-Jack Abbott corporate rivalry, his stories consistently pushed Genoa City’s biggest families into emotionally charged territory.

Griffith’s era also revolved around many of The Young and the Restless’ most iconic faces, including Eric Braeden, Peter Bergman, Joshua Morrow, Sharon Case, Roger Howarth, Lucas Adams, Hayley Erin, and Tamara Braun. Beyond the storylines, his creative leadership helped the series earn widespread industry recognition, including multiple Writers Guild of America honors and a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series Writing Team, cementing one of the most celebrated creative runs in the show’s recent history.

And now, with no successor announced yet, all eyes now turn to who will guide the next era of the long-running CBS soap.
