The first in the lineup is Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi film Interstellar. The movie is a time-bending masterpiece and a visual marvel. Set in the future, it follows former pilot Cooper, who must leave his family behind to search for a new habitable planet as Earth becomes unfit for habitation.

The film brilliantly explores the concepts of time and space while presenting its technical elements in the most realistic way possible. Another crucial aspect is how it balances the emotional elements of the story, particularly the relationship between Cooper and his daughter. Moreover, it has a star-studded cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, and Anne Hathaway.

Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan’s 2023 film Oppenheimer was his first attempt at a biopic. It follows physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, played by Cillian Murphy, and focuses on his life and his role in the Manhattan Project. More than just the story of the physicist, the film also focuses on the tension surrounding the events in the movie. Nolan’s Oppenheimer earned much appreciation from both audiences and critics and was also a massive box-office success.

It is available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.

The Prestige

The Prestige was co-written by Christopher Nolan and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and is based on the 1995 novel by Christopher Priest. Packed with subtle details, the film never stops surprising viewers, even after several rewatches. The film follows two Victorian-era magicians and rivals, Robert Angier and Alfred Borden, who go to dangerous lengths to beat each other with their magic tricks.

What makes this psychological thriller even more compelling is the terrific performance by Christian Bale. The cast also includes Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, and Andy Serkis. The movie is available to stream on Hulu and Disney+.

The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan revolutionized superhero movies with his Dark Knight trilogy, with each film being a remarkable achievement. Yet, one of the best movies in the trilogy is the second film, The Dark Knight, which was released in 2008. The screenplay was co-written by Nolan and his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and perfectly balances deep, thought-provoking aspects within a superhero story.

The film also stars Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, and Morgan Freeman. It follows Batman in Gotham City as the Joker, brilliantly portrayed by Ledger, throws a new wave of chaos that pushes the city's hero to his limits. The movie is available to watch on HBO Max and can also be rented on Prime Video.

Batman Begins

While speaking of The Dark Knight, its prequel, Batman Begins, cannot be overlooked. Featuring a brilliant cast that includes Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, and Rutger Hauer, the movie is Christopher Nolan’s first venture into Gotham City.

It follows Bruce Wayne as he returns to Gotham after training with the League of Shadows, determined to carry out his mission of ridding the city of crime. Not only did the film’s darker storytelling approach impress fans, but it also earned more than $300 million at the box office. Batman Begins is available to stream on HBO Max and can be rented on Amazon Prime Video.

Memento

Another masterpiece in Christopher Nolan’s celebrated resume is the 2000 film Memento. The psychological thriller is based on the short story Memento Mori, written by his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Nolan’s unique use of an unreliable narrator and non-linear storytelling makes the film even more suspenseful.

The movie follows Leonard Shelby, played by Guy Pearce, who suffers from anterograde amnesia, or in simple words, short-term memory loss, as he struggles to solve the mystery of his wife's death. Using photographs, notes, and tattoos to remember important information, he attempts to piece together clues and solve the mystery.
