Marvel’s next giant collision is bringing together two characters who sit near the top of the MCU’s power ladder. Thor has spent years battling gods, aliens, Titans, and cosmic threats, while Sentry arrived in Thunderbolts with godlike abilities that immediately made him feel like a different class of superhero.

Both are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday, where Doctor Doom represents a threat capable of forcing the Avengers and their allies into extraordinary territory.

The obvious question follows, when these two powerhouses are measured against each other, who really has the edge?

On the question of maximum power, Sentry has an extraordinary case. Marvel describes Robert Reynolds as possessing superhuman strength, speed, intelligence, invulnerability, enhanced senses, flight, energy projection, and vast psionic potential. The publisher gives his stable power level an almost absurd ceiling, describing it as potentially “virtually limitless” and likening it to “a million exploding suns.” 

Thor remains one of Marvel’s established physical titans. In the comics, he possesses superhuman strength, speed, agility, durability, longevity, and immunity to most diseases. His connection to Mjolnir gives him another formidable layer of power, including control over rain, wind, lightning, thunder, and energy.

 Comic-book Sentry has decades of stories establishing his enormous ceiling. The MCU version remains comparatively new, so his absolute limits have not been fully mapped onscreen. Based on the available evidence, Sentry owns the raw-power category, especially when his abilities approach their upper limits.

But raw strength tells only part of the story, because Thor brings a much larger toolbox into battle.

Thor’s advantage comes from experience and versatility. He has spent centuries fighting across different realms and has developed a combat style that combines physical strength with supernatural abilities. His powers allow him to manipulate lightning and thunder, while Mjolnir can summon weather, generate energy blasts, enable flight, and open portals between dimensions.

Experience carries its own weight. Thor has fought alongside the Avengers through multiple world-ending conflicts and understands how battles evolve when brute force fails.  Sentry has an impressive collection of abilities himself. His energy projection, flight, healing, invulnerability, and psionic potential make him extraordinarily difficult to contain.

Thor therefore has a more developed combat profile. His strength comes with decades of battlefield experience, multiple weapons, elemental control, and an established understanding of how to fight supernatural opponents.

Yet Sentry carries something far more dangerous than another weapon, and that shadow changes the entire matchup.

Sentry cannot really be discussed without the Void. Marvel defines the Void as Robert Reynolds’ malevolent darker half, a manifestation connected directly to his psyche. The entity possesses many of Sentry’s abilities and adds the power to manipulate matter, generate darkness, assume different forms, invade minds, and use tendrils of darkness.

The MCU adaptation follows that basic idea. In Thunderbolts, Lewis Pullman portrays Bob, Sentry, and the Void as different manifestations of one person rather than completely separate identities. Pullman and director Jake Schreier specifically worked on making those states feel like different aspects of the same character.

Sentry presents a different problem. His mental state is directly connected to the scale and reliability of his powers. A battle could therefore become unpredictable very quickly, especially if the Void becomes involved. That unpredictability gives Sentry another route to overwhelm an opponent, while also creating the possibility that his own instability becomes the reason he loses control.

So when Doomsday finally puts these pieces on the board, the real contest may come down to which version of each hero Marvel chooses to unleash.

Marvel has officially confirmed both characters for Avengers: Doomsday. Chris Hemsworth is returning as Thor, while Lewis Pullman is among the announced cast members as Sentry. Marvel’s official page also confirms the film for December 18, 2026, although its story details remain tightly protected.

On maximum power, Sentry has the stronger argument. Marvel gives him an enormous theoretical ceiling, regenerative capabilities, energy manipulation, flight, invulnerability, and psionic potential. His relationship with the Void adds an unpredictable dimension that makes his threat level unusually difficult to calculate.

Thor has a different advantage. He has spent years mastering his abilities and fighting experience across the MCU. His lightning, physical strength, durability, weapons, mobility, and battlefield judgment create a formidable package. Mjolnir itself provides a remarkable range of offensive and defensive applications.

Sentry has the higher theoretical ceiling. Thor has the more established battle profile. That distinction could make their dynamic far more interesting than a basic question of who can punch harder.
