Sebastian Stan has been playing Gotham’s casting guessing game so convincingly that even Batman might need Detective Mode to solve it. First, the actor was widely whispered to be Harvey Dent, Gotham’s doomed District Attorney, with stylist concept-art leaks giving the rumor fashionable ammunition. Then insider reports crowned him Victor Zsasz, helped along by that suspiciously Zsasz-like buzzcut.

But Gotham’s rumor mill may have finally landed on the truth: Sebastian Stan is reportedly making his DC debut as the White Knight of Gotham, Harvey Dent.

Sebastian Stan seals the deal on Harvey Dent

Sebastian Stan has apparently decided that Gotham’s biggest secret needs slightly less detective work. During a joint interview with Le Journal du Dimanche alongside Fjord co-star Renate Reinsve, Stan confirmed that he plays Harvey Dent in Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II. The confirmation arrived while discussing the equally secretive Avengers: Doomsday.

“I also cannot say anything about The Batman: Part II, by Matt Reeves, where I play Harvey Dent,” Stan said, in translation. His wording is unusually direct for an actor attached to a film guarded like Gotham’s nuclear launch codes. Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday secrecy reportedly involved restricted scenes, altered material, and fake endings, so Stan clearly knows the value of keeping studio secrets under lock and key.

Stan’s Harvey Dent confirmation through Le Journal du Dimanche could also make another persistent Batman: Part II rumor considerably more intriguing. Scarlett Johansson has been heavily rumored to portray Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s wife, meaning Gotham could be assembling one particularly famous married couple. If the casting reports hold, Stan and Johansson would bring a rather formidable star-powered partnership to Reeves’ increasingly crowded corner of Gotham, and somehow bring Winter Widow to life.

With Barry Keoghan reportedly back as the Joker, Stan’s arrival in Gotham makes it impossible not to wonder what this new DC chapter could mean for his still-unfinished MCU story.

Will Sebastian Stan be letting go of the iron-armed MCU?

Sebastian Stan may be trading Bucky Barnes’ metal arm for Gotham’s legal files, but his Marvel career is hardly heading for the exit. His DC turn as Harvey Dent does not appear to interfere with his MCU commitments, leaving the Winter Soldier firmly planted among Marvel’s multiverse chaos. If anything, his superhero résumé is getting delightfully crowded.

Following Thunderbolts*, Bucky Barnes is no longer simply the haunted supersoldier haunted by Hydra; he is now a leader of the newly christened New Avengers. His next stop is Avengers: Doomsday, where his team faces Doctor Doom before Avengers: Secret Wars potentially pushes the longtime Captain America ally into even bigger multiversal territory. Ultimately, Sebastian Stan’s Harvey Dent debut looks less like a Marvel farewell than a rather glamorous detour between Bucky Barnes’ increasingly enormous MCU responsibilities.
