Sean Penn and Adrien Brody have joined Snake Island, Doug Liman’s upcoming thriller inspired by the September 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, as reported by World of Reel. The film is based on reports surrounding a covert mission involving Ukrainian divers in the period leading up to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The real circumstances of the pipeline explosions remain disputed and subject to investigation, so the movie should be viewed as a fictionalized interpretation rather than a definitive account of who was responsible. Doug Liman is directing, with Henry Braham attached as cinematographer after collaborating with him on Road House, The Instigators, and Bitcoin. That reunion gives the project a creative team already familiar with combining physical action and grounded filmmaking.

Snake Island also reunites Doug Liman with Sean Penn after their earlier political thriller Fair Game. Production is moving forward in Croatia, with World of Reel indicating that filming will take place there during the current production period. No release date has been announced yet, leaving the eventual rollout open.

Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night explores a very different kind of suspense. Adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel by Patrick Marber, the film follows an American couple who travel to a snowy European town to adopt a baby. Their stay becomes increasingly strange as they encounter an unusual collection of characters, including a faith healer, a businessman, and a chanteuse.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence lead the cast, joined by Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, and Welker White. Principal photography took place in the Czech Republic, with filming running from late February through April across Prague and several other locations. Apple Original Films is behind the project.

Where Snake Island draws tension from covert operations and disputed geopolitics, What Happens at Night appears to build its suspense through psychological uncertainty and an increasingly dreamlike atmosphere.
