Neve Campbell revealed that Roger L. Jackson, the voice of Ghostface, remained unknown to both actors and their audience until several years after his first terrorizing appearance in the Scream films. Jackson has performed as Ghostface since 1996, maintaining his distance from Campbell and other cast members to create authentic fear through his performance.
"Roger Jackson has such an astounding voice. I did not get to meet him in the first two films. They would have him off on a phone, hidden, so that we would all have the fear that we'd actually never meet the man. I think it was a really smart thing to do. But he's a sweetheart," Campbell told Screen Time ahead of the release of Scream 7.
Director Wes Craven blocked Jackson from performing his voice work because he wanted actors to fear the voice without connecting it to any of the actor's familiar traits. Jackson performed phone calls to enhance authenticity while presenting unfiltered tension, leading Craven to extract genuinely terrified reactions from the cast.
Marianne Maddalena explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Jackson remained hidden in his undercover role, and he never visited craft services or production areas. This technique was implemented to establish authentic terror and unanticipated moments when characters received Ghostface phone calls throughout the series as the masked stalker tracked his target without being seen, both on and off the screen.
While it took two films for Campbell to finally meet and realize that the villain who terrorized the cast for so long was just a hearty man in a booth, Scream 7 promises horror nothing short of its original kind.
