The road to a Tony Award rarely starts with a cancellation notice. Yet that is exactly what made Schmigadoon! one of the most unexpected success stories of the 2026 Tony Awards. While the musical claimed Broadway’s biggest prize, producer Christine Schwarzman’s acceptance speech became a talking point of its own after she thanked Apple TV+ for canceling the series years earlier.
So why was Apple TV+ being thanked for pulling the plug on the very series that inspired the Tony-winning musical?

Fresh off Schmigadoon!‘s Best Musical victory at the 79th Tony Awards, producer Christine Schwarzman delivered one of the evening’s most memorable lines. Standing alongside the cast and crew, Schwarzman joked that Apple TV+ deserved credit for canceling the series before its planned third season. According to the producer, the decision ultimately gave the team the opportunity to reinvent Schmigadoon! for the stage, turning an abrupt ending into a Broadway success story. Needless to say, it was probably not the thank-you many expected to hear during an acceptance speech.
"I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for canceling the third season of Schmigadoon!, the TV show, because without them dropping it, we couldn't have picked it up and ran with it. So, thanks Apple TV," Christine Schwarzman said on stage.
The irony stems from the show’s unusual journey. After running for two seasons between 2021 and 2023, Schmigadoon! was canceled in 2024 despite creator Cinco Paul already having a third season mapped out, complete with 25 original songs. At the time, Paul admitted the news was difficult to process but remained hopeful that the story’s journey was not over. Two years later, that optimism looks remarkably well placed, with the former streaming series now holding Broadway’s biggest prize.
The real surprise, however, may not be the cancellation comeback story but how beloved Schmigadoon! became in the first place.
The magical journey behind Schmigadoon!'s Tony awards triumph
What began as a quirky musical comedy on Apple TV+ has evolved into one of the most celebrated theatre success stories of recent years. Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, Schmigadoon! follows New York doctors Josh and Melissa, whose attempt to rescue their struggling relationship leads them into a magical town trapped inside a classic Golden Age musical. Inspired by productions such as Oklahoma!, Carousel, The Music Man, and The Sound of Music, the series quickly won over audiences with its affectionate parody of Broadway’s most beloved traditions.

The franchise continued to expand across two television seasons before making an unlikely leap to the stage following its cancellation. Adapted from the first season, the Broadway production opened at the Nederlander Theatre in April 2026 and quickly became a critical darling. The show’s remarkable journey reached its peak at the 79th Tony Awards, where Schmigadoon! claimed Best Musical alongside wins for Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations, cementing its transformation from streaming favourite to Broadway powerhouse. However, the 2026 Tony Awards had no shortage of memorable moments, with P!nk hosting a ceremony on June 7th.
And on a night already packed with memorable moments at Radio City Music Hall, the musical’s improbable comeback story stood among the ceremony’s biggest talking points.
