Director Mike Flanagan is bringing his signature emotional depth to the legendary horror franchise, The Exorcist, starring Scarlett Johansson. As reported by Beyond the Credits, cameras are rolling in NYC, with the movie currently slated for a March 12, 2027 debut. This comes about two weeks after Jacobi Jupe confirmed to Variety at the Actor Awards that principal photography would begin "next week".
While details are still being kept tightly under wraps, as per rumors, Johansson will portray a mother facing a supernatural crisis, while Jupe joins her as her onscreen son. This will be a radical take on the 1973 classic.
Although this will be Johansson's first in the genre, she does boast a unique set of projects that make her the ideal lead for the demanding role in the Flanagan production. In the creature feature Eight Legged Freaks, she faced off against giant spiders, while Under the Skin allowed her to master the art of chilling, psychological dread as an otherworldly predator.
She further explored risky tension in the sci-fi thriller The Island and faced mind-bending biological horror in the action-heavy Lucy. These roles have refined her ability to ground fantastic or terrifying elements in believable human emotion.
The filming window for the upcoming The Exorcist project follows after several months of intense speculation.
Strategic delays and imminent production milestones
The new Exorcist film was pushed from an early-2026 release to 2027, largely due to scheduling conflicts tied to Mike Flanagan’s production commitments. Although the release was delayed from its original date, Flanagan had assured followers on Tumblr that fans have nothing to worry about regarding the quality.
“Production hasn't started, we need to finish CARRIE first. No way it's coming out next March. Nothing to worry about though”, wrote Mike Flanagan on Tumblr.
Flanagan indicated that filming would begin once his work on the Carrie series for Prime Video concluded.

Apart from Jacobi Jupe and Scarlett Johansson, the cast includes Diane Lane, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, and John Leguizamo. The production also features regulars from Flanagan, such as Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, and Carl Lumbly, to round out the expansive team, along with many others.
The full cast list is public, but the specific plot details and character motivations remain strictly under wraps. This shroud of secrecy only adds to the building anticipation for what Flanagan calls the scariest movie he has ever made.
