Earlier this year, Sandra Bullock did something surprising as she joined Instagram for the first time, stepping into a social media space she had largely avoided during her career. The Oscar-winning actress has had a fairly low online profile, so the fact that she has decided to set up an account is a big deal. Her arrival also came amid buzz about her reunion with Nicole Kidman in the highly anticipated Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel to the beloved 1998 fantasy film.

But behind the glamorous Instagram debut was a much more serious reason.

Sandra Bullock joined Instagram in April for a reason far beyond promoting Practical Magic 2. The Oscar-winning actress told the SmartLess podcast via PEOPLE that she set up the account to help shield fans from scammers using her name and image to steal money. Most of her posts so far have been related to the highly anticipated sequel, but she told the outlet the real reason for her surprising Instagram debut was to prevent impersonation scams.

“About a year and a half ago, I had to because there were people that were using my name and likeness to scam money out of people,” Bullock explained, saying the scams forced her to join social media.

PEOPLE also reported that Bullock said, the situation became especially troubling when her sister started hearing from victims who thought they had paid thousands of dollars to Bullock. The actress said that the families have struggled to convince their loved ones they have been duped. She had no choice but to set up an official social media presence to warn possible victims.

She never had any desire to be active on social media. She has been battling impersonators for over a year and had previously raised concerns about her family’s safety and innocent people being targeted. Her Instagram presence has helped her fans find her real account, but Bullock made it clear that the problem has not gone away.
