Sandra Bullock has finally broken her silence about one of the most painful chapters of her life, which was watching her late partner Bryan Randall’s battle with ALS. After a lengthy fight with the disease, Randall died at the age of 57 in 2023. The couple had been together for 8 years at the time of his passing.
And Bullock had honored Randall’s wish to keep his diagnosis private. She had also remained largely silent about her struggles during a difficult period. Now, the actress has opened up about the emotional toll of quietly watching Randall battle the disease.
Sandra Bullock reflects on the difficult years of grieving her partner
Sandra Bullock recently appeared on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, where she opened up about the difficult period when her late partner, Bryan Randall, was battling ALS. She recalled initially believing that she could handle keeping his diagnosis private. However, Bullock revealed that the secrecy eventually “isolated” her, making the situation even harder. She said that the isolation became particularly intense during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she was caring for Randall while also looking after her children.
"I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed,” she said.
“My person left a lot earlier than the body left,” she further added. “I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill."

As Bullock recalled on the podcast, it was “a trifecta that was pretty dark.” At the time, she revealed that only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, initially knew about Randall’s diagnosis. She later opened up to her friend Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman’s wife, Amanda. Bullock also recalled that Randall had been sick for nearly half the time they were together.
Their relationship had begun years before his illness became part of their lives.
