Sally Field Recalls Robin Williams Being “Unfunny” During 'Mrs. Doubtfire' Filming

Sally Field has several memories of legendary actor and comedian Robin Williams from when the two worked together on the 1993 comedy Mrs. Doubtfire, and one such memory involved her driving him almost mad by not laughing at his jokes. Williams, who made millions laugh with his incredible comedy, often improvised jokes and made his co-stars crack up, too. But while everyone else laughed at his jokes, Field remained unaffected by the comedian’s humor.

Years later, the actress recalled how Williams was almost frustrated because he could not make her laugh and what eventually made her laugh.

Sally Field recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she recalled her days working with Robin Williams while filming Mrs. Doubtfire. She remembered how Williams, whose energy and humor made the film both funny and fascinating, constantly made his co-stars burst into laughter. However, he could never make her laugh, as she found his jokes immensely unfunny.

“It drove him mad, actually,” she said.

“Robin was always trying something different to make me laugh. It was so unfunny,” she added.

Surprisingly, what Williams could not do, his co-star eventually managed by finally making Field crack up. She recalled that while they were all sitting together at a restaurant, their co-star Pierce Brosnan casually made a fart noise with his arm. And that simple, childish joke finally made her laugh.

Brosnan played the role of Stu in Mrs. Doubtfire. Williams starred as struggling actor and divorcee Daniel Hillard, while Field played his ex-wife, Miranda Hillard. But while Williams may not have succeeded in making Field laugh, he certainly made millions laugh by portraying a desperate father who went undercover as a British nanny to spend more time with his children.

And even for Field, who may not have found his jokes funny enough to laugh at, she still fondly remembers the late actor’s kindness and heartfelt gestures.

Sally Field shared memory of Robin Williams’ kind gesture

In an interview with PEOPLE, Sally Field recalled an emotional moment while filming Mrs. Doubtfire. During the shoot, she received a call informing her that her father, Richard, who was in a nursing home in Santa Monica, had suffered a second massive stroke. Field had already instructed doctors not to resuscitate him because it was what he would have wanted.

And after the call, she had to film a courtroom divorce scene that was similar to her own childhood as the daughter of divorced parents. She was devastated at the moment. And the one who noticed was Williams, and after learning the situation, the actor did not hesitate to show a kind gesture. He urged the director, Chris Columbus, to end the shoot for the day.

“He was such a diamond of a soul. I adored him,” he said.
