More than five years ago, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney dug out a precious gem, Wrexham AFC, in Wrexham. They bought Wrexham AFC and started a new chapter for themselves and the club, which is chronicled in a docuseries that quickly caught the attention of fans across the globe. Now, the docuseries not only put the football club in the spotlight but also brought attention to the city itself, making the viewers fall in love with the place. 

One such couple has eventually decided to move to the city after watching the docuseries. And Reynolds, who may have started it all, had a hilarious message upon hearing the news.

BBC recently revealed that a Texas couple, Jeff and Janice Ivey from New Braunfels, have decided to move to Wrexham after watching Ryan Reynolds’ docuseries Welcome to Wrexham. The couple shared that they had fallen in love with the people and heritage of the city and had ultimately decided to make it their new home. Reynolds was quick to respond to the news with a humorous message.

“Thank god they didn’t watch Chernobyl,” Reynolds said. 

While Reynolds joked about it in his X post, it is interesting to see how the documentary had an impact on the viewers. The couple shared that they have visited the city seven times, with their first trip taking place in 2024. After watching an episode of Welcome to Wrexham featuring the local band Declan Swans, they ordered some of the band’s merchandise. 

However, after an issue with their merchandise order, Jeff contacted the band and began communicating with its singer, Michael Hett. It was Hett who eventually encouraged the couple to visit Wrexham. Cut to the present, Jeff, who has UK citizenship through his Scottish ancestry, is currently in Wrexham for house-hunting, while Janice has remained in the U.S., selling their home and awaiting her visa.

The couple’s move has also brought attention back to the documentary that became hugely popular.

Welcome to Wrexham has five seasons, which began airing in 2022, with the latest season having premiered in May 2026. All five seasons are available to stream on Hulu, while only Season 1 is available on FuboTV. The hit documentary series has also been renewed for three more seasons, which could keep it running through at least 2029.

The documentary series follows the pair as they attempt to transform a team that was far from the Premier League, which intrigued viewers around the world.
