Ryan Reynolds may be preparing to take Deadpool into an entirely different corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this time, the Merc with a Mouth might not be the star of the show. Back in 2025, reports emerged that the actor was developing an ensemble superhero movie featuring members of the X-Men. Now, a fresh rumor has brought an unexpected Marvel team into the conversation, potentially giving the project an even bigger ambition.

Now, new speculation surrounding the project has reignited the conversation. Could Reynolds be developing something that finally gives one of Marvel Comics' lesser-known superhero teams its live-action debut?

Ryan Reynolds could be writing an Alpha Flight movie for Marvel

A recent Instagram post from the account updates4marvel claims that Marvel Studios is developing an Alpha Flight project, with Ryan Reynolds rumored to be writing the film. The post also suggests that it remains unclear whether the project will connect to Deadpool 4 or become a standalone release. This speculation follows Reynolds' earlier comments about working on an ensemble project in which Wade Wilson would occupy a supporting position rather than dominate the narrative.

In his April 2025 interview with Time, Reynolds explained that he liked keeping Deadpool isolated from established superhero groups. He also suggested that making the character an Avenger or an X-Man would undermine the very wish fulfillment that drives him. The actor described his developing project as an ensemble, opening the door to speculation about characters such as X-Force and other mutant teams. At Fanatics Fest in July 2026, he also teased the possibility of exploring comic-book deep cuts, mentioning writers Fabian Nicieza and Gerry Duggan. Neither appearance confirmed an Alpha Flight adaptation, but both offer an interesting creative context for the latest rumor.

The rumored post is particularly interesting because Alpha Flight has a connection to one of Marvel's most recognizable mutants. Rather than simply assembling another familiar group of superheroes, the project could offer an unconventional route to introducing a new Wolverine into the MCU.

Could Alpha Flight introduce Marvel's next Wolverine?

One of the most intriguing possibilities surrounding the rumor is the potential introduction of a recast Wolverine following Hugh Jackman's appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The proposed storyline could draw from the comics, where Wolverine was associated with Canada's Department H before joining the X-Men. Alpha Flight, the Canadian superhero team assembled under the government's direction, could therefore provide a natural entry point for a new version of Logan.

There is another reason the concept makes sense for Marvel. Alpha Flight has long been an established part of the comic-book universe, featuring characters such as Guardian, Vindicator, Sasquatch, Shaman, and Snowbird. The team has previously crossed paths with Wolverine, giving the studio plenty of comic-book material to explore. Ryan Reynolds' involvement could also explain why Deadpool would work better as a supporting character, allowing the ensemble to establish its own identity.

For now, Marvel has not officially announced an Alpha Flight movie or confirmed Reynolds' involvement as its writer. Still, the prospect of bringing an overlooked comic-book team into the MCU while opening the door to a new Wolverine is an ambitious direction worth watching.
