Ryan Gosling spent years as the internet's dream casting for Ghost Rider, a role requiring a motorcycle, a flaming skull, and presumably the world's most expensive helmet insurance. He expressed interest back in 2022, then teased discussions with Marvel earlier this year.
Finally, at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026, Kevin Feige delivered the kind of reveal usually reserved for a post-credits scene: Gosling was officially joining the MCU as the Spirit of Vengeance. Nicolas Cage previously took the character for two fiery rides.
Now Gosling has the keys, and a new behind-the-camera update suggests Marvel is giving this infernal road trip serious cinematic horsepower.
Dune: Part Three cinematographer joins Ghost Rider as Marvel goes old-school
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Linus Sandgren, the cinematographer behind Dune: Part Three, has joined Ghost Rider as director of photography. The production also plans to shoot on film, with cameras expected to roll in New York in 2027. Sandgren previously won an Oscar for La La Land, which makes this an amusing reunion of sorts with Gosling.

Director Shawn Levy, fresh from Deadpool & Wolverine, is steering the project, with Jonathan Tropper writing the screenplay. The pair previously collaborated with Gosling on Star Wars: Starfighter. Marvel has scheduled Ghost Rider for July 28, 2028.
Casting news is heating up, too. Heated Rivalry breakout Connor Storrie is reportedly in talks to play an undisclosed villain. His involvement remains unconfirmed, while Gosling's precise Ghost Rider identity has yet to be officially specified. Johnny Blaze remains the widely expected version.
The film-stock decision offers an intriguing visual direction for an MCU movie packed with supernatural effects. Whether Sandgren's textured photography translates into a distinctive finished movie remains to be seen. For now, the Spirit of Vengeance has acquired an impressive camera crew.
And Marvel's other incoming recruits are preparing to give the MCU an entirely different identity crisis.
Marvel's X-Men reboot assembles its next generation of mutants
The mutants are officially moving into Marvel's neighborhood, and the welcome committee looks formidable. At D23 in August, Marvel announced Kit Connor as Cyclops, Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor Charles Xavier, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver joins as Nathaniel Milbury, the villain known as Mister Sinister.

Jake Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is overseeing the reboot. Writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo have worked on the screenplay, while specific story details remain locked behind a Cerebro-level security system. The untitled movie hits theaters May 5, 2028, ahead of Ghost Rider's July arrival.
Sink's Jean Grey has already appeared in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, giving audiences a first glimpse of the mutant era. Marvel is lining up psychic powers, genetic nightmares, and an infernal biker in a single summer. Whoever handles superhero insurance deserves a raise.
