Project Hail Mary has set the box office on fire, with audiences flooding the theaters for the magical experience that Ryan Gosling’s latest movie offers in IMAX. The Phil Lord and Christopher Miller-directed Project Hail Mary has set the internet abuzz for a sequel following its roaring success in theaters. Although Andy Weir and Amazon MGM have not yet discussed anything substantial about the sequel, insiders say that a follow-up to the movie is still possible, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It is important to note that Amazon MGM, and Weir's representatives have declined to comment on a potential sequel novel or film. However, insiders to MGM emphasize that Weir is game for it. Sources also claimed that the New York Times bestselling author is also working on a new book, but that has nothing to do with Project Hail Mary.
Surprisingly, Weir has never written a sequel to his books. Even after the success of The Martian, he chose to work on an entirely different concept and came out with Project Hail Mary. But he might deviate from the pattern this time, as he has been reportedly mulling over the idea. However, it seems he is yet to find the right material for it.
The idea of Project Hail Mary turning into a billion dollar franchise is tantalizing, as the movie has achieved new heights of success for both Ryan Gosling and Amazon MGM.

Given that science fiction is a tough nut to crack and sell to mainstream audiences, it is the rarest of breeds to become an immediate box office sensation that few predicted.

So, building up on its massive success is not such a bad idea from a commercial point of view. But still, it all depends on the writer of the original source material, Andy Weir. If he deems it fit and finds a strong subject for a follow-up, then there could be more to Ryland Grace’s story in Project Hail Mary. For now, everything is just in the ideation stage, and any solid information about the franchise will only be revealed in the future.
