After the astronomical success of the sci-fi space exploration movie Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling has been on a hot streak since his 2023 blockbuster hit Barbie. Any project now with his name attached to it automatically becomes a hot commodity after such a dominant run at the box office. As all eyes are now on his next venture, which is going to be Star Wars: Starfighter directed by Shawn Levy, a new development about his association with Everything Everywhere All At Once has caused a sudden shift in focus.

There seems to be an update on his potential collaboration with the Everything Everywhere All at Once directors, not of a confirmation, but of a falling through.

A deal that was once seemingly official has now been a thing of the past. According to Deadline, Ryan Gosling will not be starring in Universal's top-secret, untitled project, which is being directed by The Daniels, also known as Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directors of Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The news of Ryan Gosling's involvement in the upcoming Universal project was first broken by Deadline itself, when the Project Hail Mary star was still in negotiations with the studio. It was found that the movie was scheduled to shoot in Los Angeles in the summer of 20 after obtaining a California Tax Credit. Scheduling, however, could not be worked out with the studio and Gosling to complete a contract because the production was unable to move past its planned deadline.

Given that Gosling is riding high off the highly anticipated release of Project Hail Mary for Amazon MGM Studios, which debuted at the top of the worldwide box office and might potentially establish a new franchise for him and the studio, the casting was viewed as a masterstroke. Eventually, the move did not work out for the studio or the directors, who will now probably be looking for someone else to headline the project.

Ryan Gosling’s departure leaves the project high and dry, a project that seems to be another sci-fi entertainer.

A fun sci-fi story with a big heart

Plot specifics for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert's upcoming movie are still unknown, all thanks to Universal’s attempt to keep everything under wraps. However, in an interview with Collider, Kwan revealed the basic idea behind the story of their latest project. Without revealing much about the storyline, the director gave the overall feel of the film and what it attempts to bring to the screen.

“It's going to be a fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart. Very existential. All those things that you would hope that one of our movies would be,” Kwan described the story as.

He went on to say that the movie will also depict a multifaceted environment, which was also cited as the reason behind the delay in the project. According to him, the complexity, depth, and paradox of what everyone is experiencing and hearing from the outside world, everything takes time to make sense, and incorporate them into a single film. Now, Ryan Gosling’s departure has given another reason for the project to be delayed further.
