As reported by Variety, Ryan Coogler will write, direct, and executive produce The X-Files reboot under his Proximity Media banner as part of an overall deal with Disney. He is joined by Jennifer Yale, who will serve as the showrunner and executive producer for the series. Original creator Chris Carter is also involved as a producer, providing a vital link to the heritage of the franchise.

The franchise expanded its cinematic reach with the 1998 feature film and the 2008 follow-up, The X-Files: I Want to Believe. This version marks the first official reboot, though the series previously returned for two revival seasons on the Fox network. The production is a collaboration between Onyx Collective and 20th Television, aiming for a high-prestige aesthetic.
