What did Ryan Coogler reveal about his X-Files reboot?
Ryan Coogler recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and confirmed that his upcoming X-Files reboot will respect the classic show’s way of telling stories. It will mix monster-of-the-week episodes with conspiracy mythopoeia, just like the original 1990s series did.
"I mean, it wouldn't be X-Files if we didn't do both, you know. We intend on having both monsters of the week and also the overarching conspiracy," Coogler told the podcast host, Josh Horowitz.
Coogler expressed that a mix of different elements and themes is partly intentional, stressing that the new version will not completely sever its ties with the original structure of the show that earned The X-Files its cult status. His pledge reassures followers of the show that the modern reboot will not be built on a single, linear story arc.
Though there are no specifics about the storyline of Coogler's X-Files reboot, he did indicate on the podcast that he has been in touch with original cast member Gillian Anderson, who immortalized the role of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully on screen. While it would be iconic to have her be part of the reboot in some capacity, nothing has been agreed upon yet.
Coogler dodged the host's direct question about Anderson's potential appearance in the reboot by gushing about the original X-Files cast, the show he grew up admiring.
Revisiting the original X-Files series ahead of Ryan Coogler's reboot
The X-Files made its grand premiere on Fox in 1993 and lasted for 11 seasons, showcasing FBI agents who looked into unsolved paranormal cases, merging science fiction with supernatural and detective drama. The show's gravitas later on went on to inspire several mega hits on TV like Lost and Supernatural.
The cast of the first series included David Duchovny in the role of Fox Mulder, the believer, and Gillian Anderson in the role of Dana Scully, the skeptic, whose interaction was a major source of the show’s emotional and intellectual tension.

The X-Files was not only a phenomenon during its first run but also continued with two more seasons in 2016 and 2018 after completing its original 9-season run in 2002. It also inspired two movie adaptations, 1998's The X-Files and the stand-alone film The X-Files: I Want to Believe (2008), thus securing its spot as a major sci-fi franchise.
Currently, the original series can be found in the catalogs of streaming services such as Hulu and Disney+ Hulu bundle in the US, as well as on Prime Video in various countries. While waiting for Ryan Coogler's highly-anticipated reboot, catch up on the mythology because 'the truth is out there.'
