Ryan Coogler is married to Zinzi Coogler (née Evans), his college sweetheart and a successful film producer. The couple met as teenagers and began dating while attending Saint Mary’s College in California. According to People, they tied the knot in May 2016 after years of building their relationship away from the spotlight.
While Ryan rose to fame as one of Hollywood’s most in-demand directors, Zinzi has also made her mark behind the scenes. She has been involved in several high-profile productions, with credits on projects such as Judas and the Black Messiah, Creed III, and Sinners.
In 2021, the couple expanded their professional partnership by co-founding Proximity Media, which has become a notable production company in the industry.
The Cooglers share three children together. The couple has remained extremely private about their kids, choosing not to reveal names or personal details publicly.
However, recent public appearances, including Zinzi’s visible baby bump at the Sinners premiere, strongly suggested that the family is ready to grow again. Recently, Ryan Coogler has reunited with Sinners cinematographer to work on his next project.
Ryan Coogler’s DGA speech only reinforced how central his family remains in his life, even while balancing the pressures of Hollywood.
Ryan Coogler praises vital DGA Healthcare
With his family life coming into focus, Coogler’s recent DGA Awards speech explains exactly why he has been making headlines. The director received a DGA nominees’ medallion presented by Sinners star Michael B. Jordan, but it was his heartfelt message that became one of the night’s most talked-about moments.
Coogler revealed that his wife was unable to attend the ceremony because she was home caring for their son, who was sick.
“I’m extra nervous today, because my anchor, my life partner, is not here,” Coogler said. “My wife and producer, Zinzi, is at home with our son, who is fairly sick, and we’re new to the parenting thing.” He said in his speech, as reported by Deadline.
He reassured the crowd that his son would recover, but admitted that the experience made him reflect on how important healthcare coverage is, especially for those in the industry who do not have the same financial security.
