With his family life coming into focus, Coogler’s recent DGA Awards speech explains exactly why he has been making headlines. The director received a DGA nominees’ medallion presented by Sinners star Michael B. Jordan, but it was his heartfelt message that became one of the night’s most talked-about moments.

Coogler revealed that his wife was unable to attend the ceremony because she was home caring for their son, who was sick.

“I’m extra nervous today, because my anchor, my life partner, is not here,” Coogler said. “My wife and producer, Zinzi, is at home with our son, who is fairly sick, and we’re new to the parenting thing.” He said in his speech, as reported by Deadline.

He reassured the crowd that his son would recover, but admitted that the experience made him reflect on how important healthcare coverage is, especially for those in the industry who do not have the same financial security.

Coogler also spoke about his deep respect for union culture, tying it to his own family history. He explained that his grandfather was a longshoreman and that unions played a major role in helping his family survive and grow over the years.

He closed by thanking the DGA for accepting him as a member and expressing pride in being part of a community that looks after its own.
