The road to the Iron Throne in House of the Dragon was built on careful casting choices, and few proved more prophetic than Milly Alcock stepping into the silver-haired fury of young Rhaenyra Targaryen. From the very first season, Ryan Condal has run the sprawling Targaryen saga with the precision of a Maester preserving Valyrian steel. Now, Condal is opening up about the moment he realized Alcock possessed the rare spark needed to command Westeros before she was even old enough to drink in many American bars.
Like a dragon egg warming beneath Dragonstone’s volcanic stone, the future of the series quietly shifted the moment Alcock walked into the room.

Speaking to Variety, Ryan Condal recalled how Milly Alcock secured the role at just 20 years old.
“People talk about the ‘it’ factor and things like that.. but she just has this dimensional quality that is not something that you can learn as an actor. There’s just a natural grace and charisma. We just knew in the first meeting with her that this is our Rhaenyra,” Condal said.
That instinct proved correct almost immediately. Alcock’s version of Rhaenyra carried the same combustible energy that once made Daenerys Targaryen feel untouchable in early Game of Thrones seasons.
She portrayed the younger princess during the formative years before the brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons consumed House Targaryen from within. Across the opening stretch of season one, viewers watched Rhaenyra evolve from a restless heir to a politically isolated royal forced to navigate betrayal, succession wars, and the growing fracture with Alicent Hightower. Alcock’s performance became one of the defining reasons the show’s early timeline resonated so strongly with audiences.
Now the dragons are preparing to fly into even darker skies. As the series marches deeper into war, the world that once belonged to young Rhaenyra has moved forward.
House of the Dragon season 3 moves forward without Milly Alcock
Season 3 of House of the Dragon is set to premiere worldwide on June 21, 2026, pushing the Targaryen civil war into its most devastating phase yet. After season two ended with Westeros standing on the edge of full-scale bloodshed, the next chapter is expected to adapt some of the most brutal sections of George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood lore. Armies are beginning to mobilize across the realm, and dragon riders are choosing sides with increasing desperation.

The new season will reportedly explore larger-scale battles and the emotional fallout of war on both factions, particularly as Rhaenyra’s claim faces mounting pressure from Aegon II’s supporters. Viewers are also expected to see the growing importance of dragon warfare itself, something Ryan Condal and the production team have slowly been building toward.
Milly Alcock’s role of Rhaenyra permanently shifted to Emma D'Arcy midway through season one as the story transitioned into adulthood and war. Outside Westeros, Alcock’s career has evolved at almost the same speed as a dragon breaking through cloud cover over Blackwater Bay. She is now preparing to step into another enormous fantasy franchise by portraying Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, in the newly rebuilt DC Universe. Even without a major return ahead, Alcock’s presence still lingers over House of the Dragon like smoke after dragonfire.
